It’s with deep sadness that we publish the passing of one of Macquarie Uni's former players, Bron Mackney. He passed away from cancer on Tuesday 15 May. Bron was 62.
He played 149 games beiween 1970 and 1993. He played in our club's first ever competition match in 1970, as well as the first practice match held in 1969. Bron played 69 games in first grade and 80 in reserve grade. He was the only player to be a member of our first two grand final teams in 1972 and in 1988 (both of which we lost).
Bron was the Club's reserve grade best and fairest winner in 1988, and was the runner up in 1989. Bron also was Reserve Grade Coach in 1989.
Bron came from a Rugby Union background. His father played two Tests for the Wallabys, and Bron played rugby for both Norths and Eastwood. He started his Australian Football with North Shore in their Under 19s. Bron's two brothers (Kim and Mike), and his son (Andrew) also played Australian Football for Macquarie Uni. Bron was awarded a Club Colour from Macquarie Uni Sports Association in 1993.
Bron was also listed in the MUAFC 1970s and 1980s Team of the Decade.
Bron suffered several serious injuries. In the last match of season 1975 in the first few minutes of the game he broke his leg playing for 1st grade after playing 2nds. The leg didn't knit properly and had to be re-broken when he was in hospital. He was also injured in an old boys game which prevented him from playing again.
We will arrange for all our sides to wear black armbands on Saturday and observe a minutes silence at fixtures at home, at Gwawley Park and at Henson Park.
Bron's funeral is at St Augustines Anglican Church, Neutral Bay tomorrow at 11am.
