Not since August 2008 have all sides recorded victories on the same Saturday. Now the challenge is to make it the rule rather than the exception. Congratulations to all the victors. I managed to get glimpses of most games and there was some impressive football being played.
The School First XVIII had a strong victory over Scotch on Saturday, winning by a goal.
The U/19s were behind for most of the day (17 pts at half time) but hung in there well and when Vents used his natural running game to score the last major it was a matter of hanging on - which they did well. Matt Mitchell was amongst the goals again, bagging another 4 while Nick Leonidas was named our best. It was a terrific team performance.
The Ressies have now gone “back to back” and are playing with plenty of method and passion. After the first round hiccup things are falling into place. There is a good blend of youth and experience which is encouraging. The game was settled in the first 10 minutes in which the boys had kicked four unanswered goals. Will McTaggart went on to kick six for the afternoon with his usual nonchalance. They included two long distance attempts on the run which defied the conditions and bought the (small) house down. Richard Mathers found himself at full back but didn’t have too many concerns while Comby got plenty of the ball in the middle. Scotty Ellis enjoyed the freedom up forward to help himself to four goals. The guys enjoyed the win and are enjoying the taste of victories.
The Seniors took on an Oakleigh side that had lost its first two games and hence were keen to get some runs on the board. The hosts played with typical intensity in what was always going to be a physical encounter. Ridgy came into the side for his first game for the year and Sean Corrigan, son of club legend John, made his debut. The father – son trend continues.
The game started with Oakleigh having the first foray into their forward line from the initial ball up, but missing with the goal attempt. That set the scene for the rest of the day with both sides missing opportunities in the difficult conditions. The quarter ended up being very even with the highlights being a couple of goals from Brade Seccull – both from roving ruck work in the forward pocket.
The second quarter was won by the home side who continued to apply the physical pressure. We were getting our fair share of the ball but finding it hard to kick goals and indeed only managed five behinds for the quarter.
Getting ourselves back into the game was the key focus for the third quarter and it worked as we had a narrow 4 point lead at the orange break, after being 13 points in arrears at half time. Our running and spreading game was beginning to bear the right results and we were getting the results on the scoreboard. Many pundits felt it has been “brewing” as Oakleigh were playing with a lot of heart but it was questionable as to whether they would be able to maintain this intensity.
The last quarter belonged to the young Bloods as youthful exuberance came to the fore. Sec continued his fine game and Ridgy and Pop slotted a couple in a solid return. It ended up being an eight goal final term and a convincing win. Raff was great again around the ground while Tim Lockwood and Josh Alkemade continued their fine start to the season.
This was a good win and while Oakleigh haven’t won a game, they will upset sides during the year.

The school's First XVIII graced the main oval of Scotch College and as usual, the grass was like a bowling green. Both sides played a quick brand of football and the ball was moving from end to end with speed despite the drizzle. With 2 late goals in the second quarter to Scotch, the Bloods went into the main break 8 points behind for the second week in a row. But like last week, they came out firing in the "premiership quarter" with 5 unanswered goals. The opposition could never make this up and even with Scotch kicking the final 3 goals of the game, the Bloods won by 24 points to put Scotch out of premiership contention with their second defeat. The Bloods make it 2 from 2.
