MATCH REPORT SUNDAY 6TH MAY
MAZENOD PANTHERS BLUE 10.4.64 defeated PARKSIDE 1 3.4.22
Making his first appearance for the Panthers after his transfer from Williamstown Daniel Oakley found no time in settling in to his new surrounds and impressed many of his team mates with his determination and attack on the ball. A great overall effort by all the team as we go two wins from two games, Aaron Yaksender was outstanding at centre half forward as he sent his big boomer kicks into the goal square were Mark Vanderven and Shaun Dux were on top all day and showed just why these guys are club leaders. Parkside approached the game with heaps of confidence after a first up win against Coburg and led the Panthers on the scoreboard by 6 points at the first change. Justin Dovaston was doing battle with stomach cramps full back and in pain but still lead by example to the younger guys on the backline. Stand out performance this week by Daniel Hassan in defense with his run from the backline had several Parkside forwards thinking they had been hit by a truck. Vickram Jholl was using his pace up forward and Matt Pearson’s aggression on the back line had Parkside players worried.
Second quarter was a ripper for the Panthers, Coach Regan had a word to all players about unselfish play, and 3 goals 1 behind by the Panthers, and Parkside failing to bother the scorer, had all players wanting to do the little one percenters to help a team mate. Beautiful blind turn by Duxy and a perfect pass to Rod Pettit at the northern end of the ground resulted in a goal.
Mark Vanderven is getting more confident each week with his knee injury and getting back to his “flying Dutchman” best form. Great play this quarter as we drove the ball forward, Rod Pettit sent a perfect pass to “Azza” who dropped his eyes toward Vander leading out and put the ball in perfect position for Vander to mark and kick a very nice goal, it was teamwork from one end of the ground to the other, coach Regan was very happy that things were looking positive for the effort that he has been making each Wednesday night.
Dovo was leading the way at full back and made an inspirational tackle in the third quarter, Aaron Yaksender was still kicking the ball directly to the forwards as he found Duxy and Vander for goals.
Peter Zapantis ruckwork was sending the ball directly to our mid fielders who we having a field day, Sammy Samason and Simon Pollock took charge of the centre, while the under rated Jake Phillips was playing fantastic at centre half back, and at one stage had a victory in a one on three situation and sent the ball forward for another Panther goal.
Peter Biscognin is growing in confidence each week, and again this week showed just how far he can now kick the ball.
John Soles was in his element in and under the packs all day, and proving just what an asset he has been since arriving at the club in 2011.Our third quarter was our best for the afternoon, scoring 4 unanswered goals.
The last quarter was fairly even by both sides as the pace of the game took its toll on the players from both sides, Josh Wallace seemed to be suffering from injury after the game so a rest next week should do him good, and bring him back to his best and fairest form of 2010.
Special mention also to our big guns that kept firing all day, “The Gun” Beau and “The Gannon”Jason were unstoppable in their second and third efforts at the ball, Jason’s smothers were inspirational.
At the final siren Mazenod Panthers came away from the Parkville oval 40 point winners.
GOALS; Mark Vanderven 3, John Soles 2, Shaun Dux 2, Rod Petitt, Simon Pollock, and Jake Phillips all 1 each.
BEST PLAYERS; Rod Pettit (Best on ground) John Soles, Jake Phillips, Sam Samason, Aaron Yaksender, Mark Vanderven , Shaun Dux, Simon Pollock, Jason Gannon, and Peter Zapantis.
With a special mention from the coach for Beau Gunning.
MAZENOD PANTHERS BLACK 1.4.10 were defeated by FERNTREE GULLY 8.13.61
Parkside were unable to field a second side so our Black team picked up another 4 premiership points.
A new team to FIDA this year Ferntree Gully were asked to play our Black team for some very valuable match practice.
The boys from the “Gully” were pretty good and played some exceptional footy for first timers, Coach Matt Johnson took control of our Black team for the first time but several of our players took two or three quarters to settle into his new game plan, however by the final quarter things had started to gel and Jason Gannon kicked our first goal for the game.
Thanks to several of our players from Panthers Blue that played a second game after a very hard game against Parkside, Jason Gannon, Peter Biscognin, Daniel Hassan, and Toby Crook,
these four players were at the coal face for most of the day, however Chris Johnson, Damian Cousins, Anthony DiStasio, and John Hamilton took a more leadership roll in this game and lead by example all game. Ferntree Gully had a big advantage with several experienced players bigger and stronger than the Panthers, but in true courage and determination the Panthers never gave in and kicked the last goal of the game. David West showed flashes of brilliance, while Nick Crilly was using his dash up and down the wing. Corey Pollock again had problems with his hammy’s and spent a great deal of time having them massaged by our super trainer Lisa Sinclair.
George Youssef narrowly missed the big ones on two occasions and very unlucky not to score his first goal for the season.
Coach Matt Johnson was having heaps of trouble keeping up with the interchange bench with many players preferring to stay with him rather than running on to the field of battle. David Gorin was proving yet again why he is known as the voice with his encouragement from the boundary.
Both Jack Morrison and James Hosken have grown at least six inches since last year and both were able to use that height in their positions, Jack in the ruck and James up forward trying to steal a goal.
Roger Winter decided to give up his normal ”run with” role and spent the game directing play from the centre square, while new dream recruit Nick DiStasio in his second game was making full use of his opportunity on the ground by contesting every footy that came his way. Andrew Conner again put in a very consistent effort and tackled every task given to him by Coach Johnson.
GOALS: Jason Gannon
BEST: All the guys from the first game, plus John Hamilton, Chris Johnson, Damien Cousins, David West, Nick DiStasio, Corey Pollock, Nick Crilly and Jack Morrison

FIDA RULES 2012
The Panthers have two teams Panthers BLUE and Panthers BLACK, and will play in Division 2. Our Blue team will consist of 15 players with three interchange players only.
If both coaches agree teams can play up to 18 players. If coaches cannot agree, the number of players on the field will be 15. Minimum of 12 to constitute an official game, if one side has only 12,13, or 14 players the other side is allowed to play 15 players.
For our Black team, if both coaches agree teams can play up to 18 players, with no limit to the number of interchange players. Minimum of 10 players constitute an official fixture.
If a side in either division is unable to field the minimum number of players for an official match, a ”scratch match” can be played and coaches can even up the teams.
A maximum of 3 players can play two matches per day.
Our Black team may play a couple of scratch matches during the season against Cranbourne and Parkside both of these clubs are having trouble fielding a second team, on these occasions we would get the 4 premiership points for winning, and play a scratch match against a few of their remaining players and ourselves. We have two teams in Division 2. Blue and Black. To enabled team balance on match day to cover missing players
