Frankston has recorded their first win of the year in a come from behind effort against Coburg Tigers. Frankston were behind for the majority of the game but were able to restrict the Tigers to just one behind in the final term, whilst kicking 4 goals to run out winners by 16 points as Dale Fenney and Anthony Stanguts report.
Coburg began the game strong, kicking the first two goals through Andrew Browne and Angus Graham in the opening five minutes. After early inaccuracy Frankston scored their first goal through Daniel Corp, but Coburg got the late reply to lead by 11 points.
Scoring proved difficult in the second term, until Robert Clements goaled at the 15 minute mark for Frankston. Coburg followed up with the next 2 goals to Graham and Matthew White to further extend their lead. Graham was proving the dominant big man for Coburg, with both team captains Nick Carnell for Coburg and Luke Potts for Frankston dominated much of the first half. Coburg was leading by 13 points at half time.
Coburg opened the scoring quickly in the second half, with their first goal in just minutes. The quarter went goal for goal until Coburg gave away 2 50m penalties from the backline to gift Frankston their next goal. With Frankston kicking another 2 goals they hit the front by a point until Jordan Ludica goaled for Coburg to silence the crowd and get the Tigers back up by five points. Coburg kicked another late goal to take a 10 point lead into the final term, hoping it was enough to help claim their first win at Frankston since 2006.
Frankston kicked the first 3 goals in the first 12 minutes of the last quarter to wrestle the lead their way. Goals to Robert Clements, Corey Buchan and captain Luke Potts got them up by 10 points. The next 14 minutes was a defensive battle, but Frankston final broke through for the match winner to take their first win of the season by 16 points.
Frankston coach Simon Goosey praised the work of a number of his players after the game.
“Kyle Martin killed it along with Shane Hockey and Leigh Kitchin in our midfield. Our Captain Luke Potts really stepped up as well.”
Coburg coach Adam Potter was disappointed in his sides inability to quell the Dolphins midfield dominance when it counted.
“We couldn’t stop there midfield dominance in which Martin, Hockey and Kitchin won the battle against our midfield. They took 18 marks inside 50 we just couldn’t stop there dominance.”
Frankston have got there first win of the year and get a week’s break with the bye. Coburg meet Box Hill this week down at Highgate Rec. Reserve at 2:00pm.
