In the first home game of the 2006 season, Newcastle City were able to just get over the line in their Black Diamond Cup clash against a determined Nelson Bay Marlins.
It was a tight and see-sawing affair for most of the day with the Marlins taking the lead by a point with about 10 minutes to go. City were able to lift and get their noses in front at the right time with a great snap by Cleaver from the clubroom pocket proving to be the match winning goal.
Dave Munro had a nice return to form on the last line of defence and was ably supported by the speedy Enright and a disciplined Michael Stone.
Mitch Knight kicked some nice running goals along with his brother Courtney and Michael Kemp was a great target up forward. Cotter and Dooley battled hard all day in what was another fierce encounter against the Bay.
In the First Division encounter City were able to get the decisive break in the third quarter and win by a comfortable 38 points. Chris Webster played a great game along with Wheeler, Aaron Holmquest, Nathan Stewart, Deedy and Cameron Mitchell.
Both sides now find themselves third on the ladder with a solid start to the season.
Ladies Day was again a great social day out with the City Fort looking resplendent in the beautiful autumn sun, as did the ladies! Well done to everyone who volunteered their time and effort for the day with the "many hands make light work" mentality working a treat.
This week its back down to Gosford for a Round 1 re-match in the Black Diamond Cup, with the First Division and Under 18's set to take on a rapidly improving Lake Macquarie outfit at Teralba.
