Match Report Ben Carbonaro
The Werribee Tigers tasted success in their first foray into the Foxtel Cup with a 133-point drubbing of Tasmanian State League (TSL) team Burnie Dockers at Etihad Stadium last Saturday.
Werribee was looking to open with a win and become the first Victoria team to progress to the next stage of this competition.
After two consecutive VFL losses the Tigers started the game strongly booting nine goals to one behind. Their superior ball handling skills and run through the corridor was impressive. Werribee led by 57 points at quarter time.
At half time with a 61 point lead Werribee coach Scott West asked for his team to maintain their high intensity level and finish off the game strongly. Again the Dockers kicked two goals during the third quarter, but Werribee kicked eight and made every opportunity for Burnie to get the ball moving quickly tough. The Tigers led by 96 points at the final break.
The Tigers closed out the game strongly showing no signs of dropping their work-rate. A seven goal to two quarter helped the Tigers progress to the next level of the Foxtel Cup.
North Melbourne’s Ben Warren kicked five goals in a super performance from the hit up forward for Werribee, while Ben Speight (21 disposals, 3 goals) was best on ground for the Tigers.
Zach Mihocek kicked three goals to top the goal kickers list for Burnie and Trent McCrossen (20 disposals) was best in a losing side.
Werribee will now face the winner of the Ainslie v West Perth match in a quarter final on Saturday June 9 at a venue yet to be determined.
