Port Melbourne has created VFL history by winning their 24th consecutive game.
The Borough overcame the newly named Bendigo Gold at the Queen Elizabeth Oval on Saturday afternoon.
Port Melbourne coach Gary Ayres praised the winning characteristics of his group.
"The guys have been able to find a unique trait amongst themselves, and that's to win. And today you couldn't have done it any better.
"We have cemented ourselves in the record books forever," said Ayres.
The VFL premiership coach was happy with his sides willingness and dedication to create history in the modern game.
"Purely and simply you want to create your own history. 24 consecutive wins is an enormous achievement by this group in the modern day.
"We have heard so much about the great Port Melbourne sides in 1980, 81, 82. They were not able to do what we have done today," said the record-breaking coach.
Port Melbourne celebrate history
The reigning premiers winning characteristics shined true in the final term.
After trailing by 2 points at three quarter time, they slammed on six goals to Bendigo’s one to win by 28 points.
Port Melbourne's elite got them over the line with some final quarter heroics. Dean Galea, Shane Valenti, John Baird and Chris Cain ensured the Borough entered the record books.
"The guys are led by some of Port Melbourne finest leaders. They create a ground swell and the younger guys come through that", said Ayres.
Ayres knew Port Melbourne wouldn't have it all their own way against the improving Bendigo Gold.
"I knew it was going to be a hard day, Bendigo were impressive last week against Frankston. They took it right up to us.
"You only have to be in front when the siren blows at the end of the game. That’s what we did again," said Ayres.
Port Melbourne will now look forward to continuing their unbelievable winning form by getting the best out of their list.
"We have to make sure we isolate each game, because we haven't got our best personal available at the minute.
"We have to make sure that our winning puts a lot of heat on the opposition. Because the competition is just so even.
"It was hot conditions, it was hard conditions, and we were able to come up with a terrific away win."
The match made history in more ways than one. It was the first time Bendigo played on their home turf with their new nickname – Bendigo Gold.
They showed some glimpses of what is to come under their new nickname, by pushing the reigning VFL premiers to the limits.
