In a high standard match where the lead changed in the first half, the Northern Knights held off a spirited Western Jets Squad to win by 21 points, in the opening game of AFL Victoria's 2012 U/16 Metropolitan Carnival.
Kicking with the wind in the first quarter, the Northern Knights got off to a flyer kicking 5 goals to 3 to lead by 13 points at the break. Early in the 2nd quarter they extended their lead, however the Jets came back to kick five unanswered goals to lead by 1 point at half time. Knights Reece McKenzie (son of Carlton Premiership player, Warren McKenzie) had kicked 3 goals, while Jets H Bray & C Sullivan kicked two each.
In the 3rd quarter the Knights bounced back to kick 4 goals to the Jets 2 to hold a slender lead of 9 points at 3/4 time. The Knights N. Mackay at full back was repelling most attacks and Billy Murphy (Rover) kicked his 2nd goal, while the Jets rover H Bray kicked his 3rd goal for the game.
In the final quarter to Knights steadied and kicked 4 goals to the Jets 2 and posted a credible 21 point victory.
