Netball and tennis players in Greater Bendigo will be able to play on well into the night thanks to $108,000 in lighting upgrades at Strauch Reserve and raywood Recreation Reserve, announced by the minister for Sport and Recreation Hugh Delahunty.
Making the announcement at Strauch Reserve, Mr Delahunty said the upgrades were funded under the Victorian Governments Community Facility Funding Program.
"The installation of court lighting at both Strauch Reserve and Raywood Recreation Reserve will mean training can now take place during weeknights, maximising usage at thes great facilities", Mr Delahunty said.
The project will benefit the almost 1,800 players who use the two spots reserves each week. Currently players, particularly senior womens netball and tennis teams, have to source other training grounds due to lack of lighting at Strauch Reserve and Raywood Recreation Reserve. The new upgrades will mean the facilities will be able to fully utilised, particularly in the winter months.
Mr Delahunty acknowledged the Greater Bendigo City Council for its $65,000 commitment to the project. He also praised local sporting and community groups asociated with the grounds for contributing a further $12,000 to the upgrades, including $7,000 from Huntly Football Netball and Tennis Clubs and $5,000 from the Raywood Progress Association.
The Victorian Government is proud to support quality projects like this one through its Community Facilities Funding Program", Mr Delahunty said.
Ensuring local people have access to sport and recreation facilities is a key element in the Victorian Government's plan to get more people, more active, more often.
