AN HEROIC effort from Peter Richardson was not enough to save the North Richmond Jets from their second consecutive defeat as they went down to Bligh Park by three wickets in a last over HDCA fifth grade thriller at University 2 on Saturday.
It was a solo effort from Pi Rate, with excellent support coming from Matty 'Ginger' Beggs as the Jets fought back from an impossible position to almost pinch the points at the business end of the match.
After winning the toss and batting, Northo was quickly in dire straights as it slumped to 3/18 in the seventh over before a painstaking rescue mission was undertaken by captain Brendan Rhodes and Harry Stever in the face of bowling that could only be described as above fifth grade standard.
They took the score to 48 at two runs an over, with even that run rate being boosted by two huge sixes from Potter, before he was dismissed in the 22nd over for 22.
His departure sparked a monumental collapse as the Jets lost 6/23 trying to up the scoring rate against the back up bowling attack, and at 9/71 in the 30th over the situation looked almost hopeless.
But then the Pi Rate ship sailed in and, with a willing support act in Ginger, he blasted a magnificent unbeaten 57 in a 64-run 10th wicket partnership in just 10 overs, smashing four boundaries and three sixes, two of them in the space of three balls.
Beggs was finally dismissed in the final over for a crucial five as North Richmond set a target of 135 for the Parkies to chase.
The two heroes with the bat weren't finished there, however, with Ginger picking up a wicket first ball of the innings to a sharp catch at second slip from Mat 'Afghan' Laurence, and when Pi Rate found two edges through to Rod 'Quasimodo' Bayne in the next over (one of them a diving one glove screamer), Bligh Park was in all sorts at 3/1 off two overs.
Afghan took his second snare shortly after to reduce the home team to 4/14, and not long after Ginger grabbed a third scalp to make it 5/34 and the match had completely swung around to the Jets.
Ginger bowled out his 10 overs up front for excellent figures of 3/28, but while the bowling continued to be tight, Bligh Park worked its way back into it through an excellent performance from opening batsman Tim Silk (51) as he moved the score to 5/89 before there was another twist.
Les Cass removed Silk and Afghan struck in the following over to make it 7/90, but dropped catches would again return to haunt the Jets as the Parkies rode their luck to pass the score off the first ball of the final over with good running between the wickets a feature as they took second place into the Christmas break.
Pi Rate was unlucky not to get the breakthrough when he returned and finished with 2/30 off 10 overs that belied his efforts, while Carpet finished with 1/15 off six, Afghan 1/30 off 7.1 and Seb Reay bowling much better than his 0/26 off six on debut.
The North Richmond Jets go into the Christmas break in third spot on the ladder and looking forward to getting back into two day mode, although they must first negotiate another 40-over contest against Glossodia at Royal Glossy Park on January 14.
The team wishes everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and hopes 2012 raises the bar in prosperity from 2011.
