The East Malvern Junior Football Club, has an ongoing commitment to responsible alcohol management and is applying for Level 0 accreditation under the Australian Drug Foundation’s Good Sports program.
The program provides leadership and support to community sports clubs throughout Australia to manage alcohol responsibly. It aims to help clubs become more viable by creating a safe and friendly environment whilst addressing their duty of care obligations in relation to alcohol consumption.
The program is run in Victoria by the Australian Drug Foundation in conjunction with VicHealth, DHS, TAC, DrinkWise and the Department of Health and Ageing. The program has been designed to assist clubs with the responsible management of alcohol and is the only nationwide program of its kind. The program was developed following research conducted by the Australian Drug Foundation which indicated that by introducing responsible alcohol management practices, clubs became safer and more viable.
As a community based club, involvement in this program is an important step towards recognising the responsibility the club has to members, families and the general community. We are confident that it will continue to improve the environment at the Club as well as ensure it is a great place to participate and socialise.
To become Good Sports Level 0 accredited, we will address a number of criteria including having alcohol and smoke free facilities. We will also ensure we have a safe transport strategy and alcohol policy for functions involving alcohol away from the club.
The club will be regularly monitored to ensure compliance with the program. It is the responsibility of all members to make sure the right thing is done while enjoying ourselves.
