Highett Football Club Seniors are Southern Football League Premiers for 2011.
Playing at Clayton on Saturday September 24 in the windy weather also present on the previous three Saturdays, supporters faced much colder conditions than earlier finals.
The opposition club Bentleigh, was coming into the competition from the VAFA this season and kicked off with the wind, taking the lead in the first quarter. However once Highett took the lead in the low scoring game, the Doggies played their best football of the season. Another Premiership third quarter set no doubt as to Highett’s will to win and the Demons were defeated by a neat five goals five behinds,35 points. Players and supporters headed back to the club rooms and celebrated the spoils of victory as President Byron Smith organised that the players be introduced individually to be recognised and given a cheer from the large crowd. Most stayed nearby overnight, with all players back for a late breakfast on Sunday, while former President Roslyn Flett represented the club at the SFL Grand Final Breakfast. (See below )
Highett Football Club Grand Final Breakfast 2011
Roslyn thanked the SFL for the opportunity to speak as a representative of Highett Football Club and explained others were either sleeping it off, or still celebrating the victory.
“Firstly I wish to thank the Bentleigh Football Club for a great game yesterday. I think that four week windy weather streak had a lot of affect on the whole finals series, so there was an element of luck, no matter what the skill sets of any players. Our boys however did play out of their skins, especially when they hit the front in the third quarter.
Almost two years ago, it was my pleasure to appoint Trent McMicking as Senior Coach of Highett Football Club. My only criteria had been that we wanted a good person with a passion for football!
I heard it in his voice and saw it in his eyes and recognised in his manner that he was also serious about the job and really wanted to be at Highett. He had trained at the club when working in the city while still playing in the country.
Yesterday it was proven to be a good decision. Trent quickly put together two valuable people for his off-field team, Pat Mulchay and David Standfield. He then appointed his own two playing assistants, Greg (Reg) Hoskin and Jake Ellen. Along with Footy Operations Manager, Jay Valencic, these six good men found others and blended them into our players that had done a darn good job in 2010. It makes me feel proud of what all of these men have achieved, by working together. There were no independent individuals among the Doggies team.
Through the season, as I put the team in at Sporting Pulse, I had to make six changes from the previous week. Tears silently fell as I deleted names, but my fears slowly dispersed as I added their replacements. That was the moment my hopes turned to belief. I knew we had enough depth to see us through to the end.
The thing about grand finals is always that it takes more than the coaching staff and twenty-two players on the day to get to the BIG ONE. It takes all that played Seniors during the season, along with a lot of off field people and a few very good hard workers to support the effort and we would like to acknowledge all those that had a part in this journey to the Premiership Cup.
After seeing the DVD of the game and Presentation Ceremony, before I complete this speech, I wish to apologise to SFL Board member Gary Cranny for the few too many hugs I gave him while trying to hide my tears of relief and hope my shaking legs would still hold me up if I let go of him – poor man.
If you will pardon me for being rude for a moment I will tell you how we won the Premiership “We did it Doggie Style –We shit it in!!!”
