After the success of week 1, week 2 was not quite as joyous for the Goanna’s. Div 2 took on Penrith on the Saturday looking to book a spot in the grand final in a game that also saw club legend Troy Balzan equal the club games record with his 352nd appearance. As expected, the battle between the top 2 sides in the competition was a close game all day, with the lead changing hands many items through the day. After trailing narrowly at quarter time, the Goannas got themselves in front after an excellent second quarter, and at the lat change were a single point in front. Unfortunately the fresher legs of Penrith were able to pull through, and when the final siren sounded the Goannas had gone down by 7 points in a gruelling game. Craig Geddes was best on ground with an excellent performance in defence all day. Matt Cahill, Jack Schwarze, Shaun Costello, Luke Walsh & Luke Cocks all had excellent games in the midfield and generated plenty of opportunities through the game.
Unfortunately the season has come to an end for our Under 18’s, who went down to Macquarie Uni on Sunday. After a win over the Warriors in their last meeting, as well as having the advantage of the game being played at Fortress Gipps, the boys went in confident of being able to progress for another week. The first half was a tightly fought affair, with the Goannas narrowly trailing at both quarter and half time. The third quarter saw the Warriors pull away and despite their best efforts, the Goannas could not claw it back and ended up going down by 36 points. Jesse Clark was named best on ground with an excellent performance up forward, and was well supported by Sam Neill, Ben Jenison, Tim Watson, Gebre Zenebre and Allan Leabeater. Congratulations to Johnno and the boys on another excellent season which shows great signs for the future of the club.
