Spring is sprung, and a glorious sunny Sunday was served up at Blacktown Olympic Park for sudden death semi final day. The Bombers had two teams in action, with the Under 18s in action starting at 11:00am.
But it was a slow start for the Bombers, as Riverview took the early initiative and the first three goals. But later in the quarter the Bombers fought back, getting the margin back to within a kick at one stage after back to back 50m penalties to Errol Sertbas and trailing by 11 points at quarter time.
The second quarter saw the Bombers lift around the ground, but it was a frustrating quarter of footy. The Bombers struggled to convert their chances, and were unable to get sufficient reward for the effort they put in. There was one goal, after a courageous ack mark by Lachlan Harris; but the Bombers hit the post three times in a return of 1.8 for the quarter, and for all their efforts they still trailed by 11 points at the long break.
Unfortunately our worst quarter for the season came at exactly the wrong time, and the fortunes of the season went pear-shaped in the third term. The Bombers tried hard, but their plans weren't working, the marks weren't sticking and the ball was turned over too easily. And with a couple of 50-50 calls not going our way, the Bombers were up against it. The Bombers did score two goals for the quarter, including a fine long torp by Daniel Schacher; but leaked six goals and the Bombers found themselves trailing by 38 points at the last change.
The game was out of North Shore's reach, and the floodgates opened in the final quarter to blow the final margin out to 62 points. It was a disappointing end to the season to go out of the finals in straight sets. The Bombers had toiled hard all season in the face of adversity, and even at the death their effort couldn't be faulted. But, cruelled by an abnormally high injury toll all season, their resistance could last only so long. But this season has been one of development for our young Bombers, and we've seen some of them begin to make their mark at senior level. Their fighting qualities and ongoing skill development will serve our young Bombers well in what we hope will be long careers in the black and red of North Shore.
