The Tweed Coast Tigers are looking to etch another notch in their short history when they travel to Lismore this Sunday to take on the Lismore Swans in the 2011 Summerland AFL Grand Final.
The Tigers are the defending champions and a combination of a dominant season (they have only dropped one game) and full squad of quality players should see them go into Sunday’s match as favourites. However complacency is not a word that fits the Tigers ethos and they will not be taking the Lismore Swans lightly.
The Tigers have built a reputation of playing hard unrelenting football and are determined to bring this to Sunday’s battle. Their dominance this season has started in the middle with the twin tower rucking combination of Nathan Wilson and Brennan Lye who create a formidable force at the stoppages. Combined with the Tigers classy onball team of Jonathan Bevan, Captain Jai Purcell and newly awarded League Best and Fairest Jimmy Walle the battle for the football will be a tough contest.
The Tigers have quality all over the paddock and no more so than their star full forward and league leading goal kicker Ash Gemmill. Gemmill’s ability to lead and outmark much larger defenders has seen him create havoc for the opposition all season and the Tigers will be looking to him again on Sunday. If the Swan’s can manage to stifle Gemmill’s dominance then the Tiger’s have proven they are by no means a one trick pony in the goal scoring department with the likes of Lachln Earl, Jessie Wilmen, Jacob Eldridge, Ben Kelly, Shane Peddie and Josh Bone all capable of finding the big sticks.
Whilst the forward and mid line of the Tiger’s have secured all the accolades and trophies so far this season it is perhaps the backline who provide the platform for success. With the likes of Timmy Wells , Thor Hoopman and Josh Edwards the backmen bring a powerful and aggressive running approach to their work. Consistently rebounding opposition attacking raids these quiet achievers will be a key asset if the Tigers are to go back to back this weekend.
The Seniors game starts at 2.30pm at Oakes Oval Lismore following the junior grand finals. The Tweed coast Tigers will compete in 3 out of the 4 grand finals in what could be a massive day for the Tigers club and supporters.
