Saturday morning at Bruce Purser Reserve was slightly misty, although the sun soon emerged. Our finals series started with the Under 18s in action against local rivals Pennant Hills.
The match started well for the Bombers, with Mitch Robertson converting a brilliant goal from a tight angle; but Robertson's day would come to a premature end shortly afterwards when he was involved in a nasty collision and was assisted from the field.
The Bombers worked hard during an evenly-contested first quarter, and led by five points at quarter time. Early in the second term the Bombers threatened to get on top with two early goals; but the Demons fought back with two goals of their own. At the long break, a tight and physical game was in the balance, with the Bombers three points ahead.
But the Bombers fell behind in the third term, only able to manage one goal to the Demons' three to fall seven points behind at the last change. And when the Demons scored in the opening minute of the final quarter, the Bombers were in trouble.
But the Bombers fought back. The ball spent the last ten minutes camped on the North Shore forward line. Lachlan Harris snapped a magnificent goal, while several other shots went agonisingly close but went just wide. The Bombers kept the ball forward, looking desperately for the winner; but it would not be forthcoming as the Demons held on.
The Bombers went down by four points, and will be in action next Sunday in the first semi final, taking on the winner of tomorrow's elimination final.
