Well, the home and away rounds are over and the serious stuff now begins. Congratulations to our Senior team who finished third on the ladder and have now earned the double chance. Well done also to our Division 1 Under 18 team who also earned the double chance after finishing second in the premier Under 18 competition. Bad luck to our reserves team who just missed out on a finals spot, and better luck next time also to our Div 2 U18 team who also missed out on the finals.
Seniors
Last week Altona recorded a 180 point win against Glenorden who finished winless for the season. Altona rested a number of senior players which gave those coming into the side a chance to impress the coaching staff.
Brett Shiels was the leading goal kicker for the game kicking (5) and Corey Lawson was not far behind him kicking (4). Other multiple goal kickers were Josh Saville (3), Freeza (3), China (3), Matty Cross (2), Jake McKenzie (2), and even full back Nathan Leslie was in the action kicking (2). A highlight of the game was the return to the senior team of spearhead Guy McCleish who was running around like a 20 year old and moving like a gazelle. This was a great return after announcing his retirement at the end of last season so well done China (and that`s 20 bucks you owe me big fella)!
It was a great effort from midfielder Tim Andrews who was BOG, Corey Lawson was back to his best, Rodney Rich was all class as was Josh Rafferty in the ruck, and 17 year old Jake McKenzie showed why he is a respected Western Jets player.
Goal Kickers: B. Shiels 5, C. Lawson 4, R. Rich 3, J. Saville 3, A. Freeland 3, G. McCleish 3, N. Leslie 2, M. Cross 2, J. McKenzie 2, E. Henderson , D. Barnaby , G. Jenkins
Best Players: T. Andrews, C. Lawson, R. Rich, D. Barnaby, J. Rafferty, J. McKenzie.
Reserves
Our reserves also had a huge win beating Glenorden by a massive 143 points. It was great to see five under 18 players Ben Davies, Bryce MacCartney, Daniel Saville, Matty Debono, and Matt Davis debut in this game.
Chris Dalli and Alex Vivoda kicked 5 goals each, and other multiple goal kickers were Shaun Hagger (3), Daniel Saville (3), Matt Davis (2), Bryce MacCartney (2), Matty Debono, and coach Nathan Costello who kicked a lazy (3).
Bad luck to our reserves boys who just missed out on a finals spot.
