MATCH REPORT - BY SERGE D'ANGELO
The luck of the Irish smiled on Zebraland as Tom Walsh booted his sixth and most important goal for the afternoon to regain the lead with minutes remaining in the game. Those few minutes seemed an eternity as the Magpies had the ball in the forward 50. The Zebras certainly enjoyed the sound of that siren.
The 3 point victory was truly a courageous performance as once again we lost players early in the game. Michael Gardiner injuring his hammy in the first few minutes of the contest. Chris Waller was poleaxed as he placed his body on the line once again only to find himself spending quite some time in the hands of the medical staff. Fortunately for him and the Zebras he returned in the 3rd quarter to add the extra spark and run we desperately required collecting 19 possessions and 7 tackles.
This game was played in perfect conditions and goals came more freely for the Zebras than in recent weeks as we kicked 9 goals in our first half. A vast difference from our last few outings.
We kicked 5 goals to 3 in our opening term with the midfield getting their hands on the ball. James Magner (33 touches, 7 tackles) Marcus Marigliani (28 touches, 16 contested possesions, 1 goal), Al Smith (30 touches, 8 tackles), Nick Heyne (22 touches) and Tom Curren (13 kicks, 3 handballs) winning the ball on a regular basis.
Marcus “Rigga” Marigliani in particular was very damaging with his disposal. James Magner was dogged in the clinches and collected 30 plus possessions.
Debutant James Orr capitalized on our good play with 2 goals and made a real impact during the game for Sandy playing very well in the ruck (22 hitouts). His athleticism added great versatility to the playing group. The introduction of Michael Meehan (14 possies) and Peter Shakallis (15 possies) to senior ranks was most successful and exciting for the club. They picked up the tempo very quickly and did excellent jobs in defence. All three have earnt their spots in the senior side and this is terrific for the future of the club. The further the game went the better they played.
The game ebbed and flowed all day with both teams placing defences under pressure as both forward lines had plenty of chances to kick goals.
Tom Walsh was outstanding as he kicked 6 goals 3 behinds for the day, had 18 touches and took 8 marks: his match winning final ¼ snap goal was a beauty. Mick Lourey found the big sticks again kicking 4 goals responding to Brett Lovett ‘s challenge for a more complete performance.
The efforts of Captain David Gallagher (24 touches, 8 tackles, 8 marks) was exactly what we have come to expect from the 3 time premiership player. He was tireless as he played on ball and in defence. He committed himself continually to winning the hard ball and mopped up across half back setting up forward thrusts all day. He led by example and others followed willingly.
James Hallahan (13 touches, 9 marks, 5 positive acts) continues to impress as a defender taking a number of timely marks and backed his judgement all day. Tom Simpkin who has been a very good defender all year had to deal with Magpie tall forwards the course of the afternoon and did not let the team down with 7 spoils. He and Daniel Archer (whose last term was most impressive) did a fine job as they gave away many centimeters in height.
The performance of younger players for the Zebras would have put a smile on the face of many supporters. Madison Andrews and Rob Cathcart are 2 very hard working players who play with great enthusiasm and courage. These players will continue to develop as they gain greater senior experience.
We travel to Geelong next week for our final game MAYBE.???. We are 1 game and 5 % out of the top eight ( how many points is that.) You just never know. Go Zebs.
Finals Equation
Box Hill Hawks (8th) have 7 wins and a percentage of 90.3%, Sandy (9th) have 6 wins and a percentage of 85.2%. Next week Box Hill play undefeated Port Melbourne while Sandy play 10th placed Geelong. A decent win and a decent Box Hill Hawks loss would mean FINALS FOOTY!
If Port Melbourne win by 10 goals over Box Hill, Sandy only need to win by 26 points (Sandy 87.4% and Box Hill 87.3%) working on a Port Scoring 100 and Box Hill 40.
Every 8 points more Box Hill kick, Sandy need to win by an extra point. So at 150-90 Sandy would need to win by 32 points. Working the other way, for every 10 less points Sandy score, they need to win by an extra point. So at 70, Geelong need to be kept to 41 (29 points).
