Keen to take a second scalp in as many weeks, the ressies boys took to saturday with a new found confidence and purpose. With such a big day for the club on the cards, we were ready to set the tone for the day and kick things off to make it a long day for the boys from the west.
From the get-go it was clear that we were on and ready to do what it takes to win the quarter. Midfield dominance saw some great supply into our forward line where strong marking Rosewarne led the charges. Rosey has been threatening to grab a game by the ears of late but wayward kicking has let him down. Not so today as he marked strongly kicked straight and was very unselfish around goals, leading to many goal assists. Down back the usual suapects in Zuccon, Owen, Jeffy and co just kept getting the job done. Zib ruling the airways and marking anything in his zone then our hard running backs gave us drive and pace on the rebound. 4 goals to 1 for the quarter to the slop end and we were up and about.
Westbourne dug in during the 2nd quarter and were able to turn the game into a scrappy affair. Despite a heavy tag, the Fonz won plenty of footy and kept pumping it into the forward line and even got on the end of some goals himself as his hard running left his opponent in his wake. Tommy Rose, Pricey, Porter, Sammy O, Hoju, Chinna and Hall used the rotations well and gave us constant fresh legs and clearances through the midfield where we dominated. Down back J-Mac turned in his best performance for the year, backing himself on several occasions to crash packs, carry the ball and give us clean defensive 50 clearances. Unfortunately we lost Junior on half time to a season ending broken finger, he has become one of our real consistant performers throughout the year.
At half time we were happy with our position but with a crowd building and the ones gearing up for a dog fight, we wanted to bury a side. Some interesting umpire interpretations saw our focus shift for a moment but good leadership from our leaders on field saw us zip the lip and get on with the job as we ran away from the West men throughout the second half. A real 4 quarter performance from all the boys as the magoos are starting to form a tight knit group of blokes who are willing to work for each other. Get some preseasons into the bodies and next year the sky is the limit for these boys.
This week we seek some redemption against La Trobe who will certainly not run into the same side they saw in round 1 and we look forward to showing all at the bloods just how far we have come this year. Dont forget Harry Underpants sat morning and lets kick the weekend festival of footy off with a bang in the early game.
All the best to the senior side this week, the stakes are high but the group has been working their butts off of late and the reserves boys will certainly be behind them cheering them on (quietly) from the hill :)
