The Friars travelled to Fearon Park to face Williamstown in a game that a win would consolidate a place in the finals for 2011. The conditions were a perfect as can be down by Williamstown Beach. The opening of the game saw a fierce contest with both teams playing a physical style, however the Friars failed to adapt to the hard surface and bounce of the ball and as a result conceded 4 goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. They worked themselves back into the game with Matt Migliore very influential with 2 goals in the first quarter bringing the margin back to 10 points at quarter time.
The second stanza opened well for Whitefriars bringing the margin back to 4 points early in the quarter. The contest was ‘on’, however with the rub of the green going the way of Williamstown and excellent work by their forwards in isolating the Friar defence they were able to add the last five goals for the quarter and set up what would prove to be a match winning break of 35 points.
The second half began with the Friar midfield lead by Rowan Mattinson and ably supported by Danny Hogan and Daniel Tibaldi getting on top and generating opportunities, however they only managed to score 2 goals from 8 scoring shots. This is included a brilliant athletic effort from young tyro Tom Leechman in intercepting a kick out and returning back over the full back’s head for a goal. The game was swinging but the rewards were not.
Needing a 5 goal turn around in the last quarter – the game continued as the 3 quarter closed and in fact the margin was reduced to 13 points early in the quarter as the Friars running game was unleashed. However with the need to attack, it exposed the defence and the Williamstown midfield worked hard to generate opportunities and provide an avenue to enough goals to keep the Friars at bay.
The 19 point margin was set up by the early onslaught and from there on this was a tight game, with more composure in front of goals Whitefriars may have locked in their Final Four spot. Instead Whitefriars meet Peninsula at home this week in what is literally an elimination final, with the winner likely to claim the treasured 4th position.

The Friar Reserves assured themselves of finals action with a 10 goal win over Williamstown who were their main challenges for the last finals position. A six goal to one second quarter setup the match winning break with the Friars then going to stretch the lead out to the final margin despite the valiant efforts of their Williamstown opponents. The highlight of the game was Matt Cooper’s 5 goals and the successful return of Chris Greenland with another 3.

Ladder leaders, Bulleen-Templestowe, came to Whitefriars full of confidence but by half time they had a battle on their hands as the Friars challenged strongly all over the ground. With the margin only 11 points at half time Whitefriars were in the game but BT’s class and execution in the forward line was proving superior which was the major difference between the 2 teams. IN the 2nd half the Friars effort continued but BT managed to keep converting and eventually ran out winners by 46 points. There were many regulars in the best players but a special mention to Campbell Gauld who showed how much he has developed with a super game in defence.

There was no better example of the 3rds fighting spirit than the way the team responded to last week’s huge loss, with a very determined effort to challenge St. Bernard’s. St. Bernard’s were superior on the first half but the mighty Friars fought back to win the 2nd half in a great show of commitment to finish up 28 point behind. The highlight was the performance of Joe Urbano (4 goals) who was only taking the field for the 2nd time this season after sitting out with long term injury. Daniel Zachariah continued his transformation from boundary umpire to player with his best performance of the year.
I have taken the liberty to reprint a portion of an email from the coach Norm Elliot which I believe shows the quality of leadership he brings to the club
“The guys are a credit to themselves and the Club in the way they have conducted themselves under trying and difficult times during the year.
I’ve asked for 3 things this year of the players and they have (on the whole) delivered these:
· Leadership – step up and be accountable for your preparation and on the field, don’t leave it to others to do
· Respect – earn it for yourself and the Club each week by the way you play and what you do
· Talk – positive team talk and support for your teammates (never negative/critical) at all times
The development of some of the players through the year has been quite marked with guys like Ash Spurrell, Dane Montecillo, Matthew Pezzimenti and Daniel Zachariah all showing great improvement from when the season started.”
