Alex "Whetto" Whetton played his Junior and Youth footbal here at the Aspley Hornets prior to making the move full time as an AFLBJ Umpire.
Last week Alex participated as an umpire at the National U15 Schoolboys AFL Championships in Canberra.
As a result of his performances during the preliminary rounds he was selected as one of two field umpires to control the grand final which was played between Victoria Metro and West Australia.
Following on from this game he was named “Most Outstanding Umpire” of the carnival and has gained a place in the All Australian Team.
There are only two Queensland representatives in this team. The other is a player (a PNG National) who attends Kirwan State High School in Townsville.
For the first time, this team will travel abroad on a School Sport Australia International tour.
The tour will visit South Africa for 12 days in January 2012 and will involve 3 games against local teams plus a number of clinics in local townships.
This will be a fantastic opportunity for Alex, both from an educational and sporting perspective.
Alex credits the Aspley Hornets Club and in particular, the mentoring and guidance of it's Junior Development Officer, Les Parfitt as being major influences in his success throughout his football and umpiring career.
