In what has already been a big year for Hamilton Wildcat veteran Charles Thompson, as he took out the club leading career games holder as well as kicking his 200th career goal in Round #6 v the Toronto Eagles (currently sitting at 208 career goals in 149 games), "Chucky" is set to play his 150th OAFL game against the Guelph Gargoyles this week in front of a home crowd!!!
To anyone who has been around footy in Australia, or in Canada for that matter, long enough would know that playing 150 career games with any club or during a career is a massive achievement. To do it in Canada playing between only 12-14 games a year? Even more of an impressive achievement, since the seasons in Australia can be 25+ games a year long not including Finals. Charles has been involved actively in the Club for well over 10 years, both on and off the field. He has now achieved the Clubs all time games record (set new record in Round #1 this year v the Toronto Rebels at 139) as well as holding the Clubs all time goals record. Off the field Chuck has held at one time or another pretty well every position on the Club executive (including Club President for 6 consecutive seasons) and to be frank, held the Club together by the thread of the jumper during the mid 2000's when times were really tough financially as well as with player recruitment. In addition to his achievements as part of the Hamilton Wildcats AFC, he's also represented Northwind, the Canadian National team 7 times during his 12 year career and has been named to the OAFL All-Star Team 6 times (including a string of 5 consecutive nominations from 2003-2007. Despite having multiple knee surgeries over the years, Chucky is STILL an integral part of the team (missing only 3 games over his 12 seasons); playing as a utility both in attack and on defense and doesn't look like slowing down anytime soon as he continues to push towards his, and Hamilton's, first premiership flag in 2011.
If you've ever had the chance to play against or chat with Chucky at some point or another, you'll know that he's always one that plays the game hard and with lots of heart. He bleeds "yellow & black" through and through, and despite being the 1st Hamilton Wildcat to reach this individual milestone, we know that he's definitely far more concerned about everyone else on the Club and the success of the team as a whole than what he's accomplished as one player. The entire Club, including all present & past players, would like to congratulate Chucky on reaching 150 games, and we look to bring home a victory v the Gargoyles this coming weekend to help commemorate this big day for one of the Club's most likeable, colourful (literally) and passionate players!!! Now that you've reached this amazing milestone, its time you set your sights on playing 200 mate. Kudos!!!
