A minor 11 changes at the selection table saw us up against the Animals with a full complement of troops. The return of some old legends brought a smile to the coaches face as Williams and Hunt gave the side some much needed aggressive edge and size.
The opening quarter saw the Animals kicking with a handy wind advantage, our backs worked hard to keep them out of the corridor and meant their scoring avenues were close to the boundary or deep, this contributed to their poor kicking for goal. We were able to snag 2 late goals through some bustling from big Jon Hunt and the best looking Williams.
The second quarter was an arm wrestle, Aquinas jumping out to a handy lead after O'Halloran capitalised on a poor kick out and Rosewarne finally found the middle of the sticks. The Leo's boys hit back hard late and we went into half time all tied up.
The second half saw the game open up more, our backline was under siege but held firm. Jeff Valentine snaring best on field honours with a great game shutting down a dangerous opponent, winning the one on ones and then providing us with run and rebound. On the other flank Pete Owen gave us his typical 100% effort and repelled many attacks. Early tip but probably firming as a short priced favourite for the b&f in the tighest voting we have had for years - plenty of games left though. The Animals made the most of their chances in the second half but could not kick away from a determined Aquinas side. Taylor sacrificed his body just on 3 qtr time, contesting strongly resulting in a goal that gave us a sniff but we couldnt quite get our noses infront however, as we peppered the points in the last quarter, unable to kick truly in a tricky breeze.
The Animals would salute by 8 points, but the Bloods did not disgrace and once again showed trademark grit until the final siren. While Jeff and Pete led the boys down back, the hard leading Rosewarne and big Spencer gave us big targets up forward, Fonzy again revelled in the 2s engine room and Junior gave us another consistant 4 quarters and is becoming a very reliable Winger/HBF'er. The manchild rucked strongly and gets bigger every week. Tay continues to frustrate watchers with flashes of brilliance and with some effort could be a very dangerous player in future years. Of course Jon Hunt gave us the target at CHF all day and dominated his position and Aid Williams showed us his versatility giving his all up forward, in the midfield and the strong in the backline.
Great again to see that when the experienced boys who come into the side for cameos like Aid & Johnny, they provide us not only with their talent but take the time to chat with the young boys and give them feedback and direction, its much appreciated.
Another good effort but still no points for the boys. Aquinas supporters get down early for the remaining 3 weeks with the young blooders looking to put on a show, give their all and sing the song for all to hear. A victory is coming and we shall be dining on Turtle come luchtime saturday!
