SENIORS
After two great victories in the past two weeks the Hills were looking forward to again taking on a top four side in their run towards the finals. Unfortunately The Panton Hill home game had been moved to Ford park as the state of the ground was not up to code, but none the less The Hills were still looking forward to the challenge.
In an even first quarter the Hills kicking into a stiff breeze did well to shut down St. Marys running game. With Nathan Grimshaw playing well at full back and Will Box doing well in the middle, in a low scoring first quarter the Hills were happy to go into the break just a couple of points behind. The 2nd quarter provided a more free flowing game. Tristan Kreymborg started getting on top in the ruck, Brendon O’Connor started to hit the scoreboard, and Ben Garrard & Simon Gunn provided plenty of run from the back line. Although wasting a few chances at the half the Hills held a slender lead. At half time the boys were asked for a lift in effort to try and break the game open, unfortunately it turned out to be the worst quarter of the game for the Hills, St. Marys started to run hard all over the ground and the Hills were not willing to run with them. A couple of untidy turn over’s gifted St. Marys some easy goals, and although James Dodd and Nathan Grimshaw again tried hard to repel the attack, St. Marys were able to hold a handy lead at the last break. The Hills found themselves staring at a loss unless they could turn things around. St. Marys started the last quarter the better of the two teams and piled on 4 unanswered goals to really extend the margin. Ben Garrard was moved forward and was able to kick 3 quick goals and Brendon O’Connor also kicked a couple of his own to bring the margin back to within striking distance for the Hills, but St. Marys were able to steady with a late goal which sealed a well deserved 17 point win. A disappointing result for the Hills and one which now puts them back into a tie for fourth spot. The Hills have the bye this week which gives the boys a chance to rest and get ready for a must win game against Reservoir.
RESERVES
On Saturday the Redback Reserves took on St Mary’s who put in a solid performance in the corresponding game three weeks ago, so the Redbacks knew they needed to be right on their game from the start and be prepared to run all day. The Panton Hill side was able to provide the early scoreboard pressure as Daniel Keen and John Garrard goaled early.
John Garrard proved to be a handful up forward kicking eight as did Dylan Collins who was injured early in the warm up but was still able to take his place in the team and provide good forward pressure. Chris Sansom played well in the ruck and was well supported by Daniel Keen and Frank Trianta who had his best game this season and chipped in with three goals. Steve Northrop and Ty Dummett were solid down back only allowing three goals past them. In blustery conditions the Redbacks played well with quick ball movement and strong tackling which was relentless for the entire match and helped them to a 73 point win.
With the number of other players due back after the bye pressure for a position in the team is mounting so strong performances each week is a must for the Panton Hill Reserves Players. Go Hillers!
