SENIORS:
Last weeks round 13 clash against reigning premiers Albion promised to be the match of the round and that`s exactly what both teams delivered. Altona had a number of players out including Healy, Lawson (Dion), Hevern and Spiteri who were all a huge loss, but the supporters were thrilled to see two massive inclusions with favourite sons Steven Kenedy and Trav Lunardi back in the purple and gold.
The first quarter started as expected with neither team giving an inch. Albions midfield were in control early feeding the ball quickly into their forward line but our defence was equal to the task. Hollywood was matching it with the giant Albion ruckman giving our midfielders first use of the ball. Chippa looked dangerous down forward and was clean overhead. Albion went into the quarter time break with a narrow 2 point lead.
The second quarter was much the same as the first with Albion serving it up to us early. Trav Lunardi, Kenna, and Chui started to show their class and gave Altona some much needed spark. Chippa was still looking dangerous as was Ziggy and Corey Lawson allowing Altona to fight back to be only 2 points down at half time.
Albion started to get on top in the third quarter and it was clear that Altona were struggling with the tight confines of the small Albion ground which the opposition started playing to perfection. Skills errors started creeping into the Altona game and our forward opportunties were minimal but our boys were not about to give up and we fought back to be only 11 points down at the last break.
Albion turned up the heat in the last quarter kicking six goals to Altona 2 goals. Our boys gave it a great shake but missed opportunities finally took their toll and we went down by 34 points. The final score was Albion 14. 14. 98 defeated Altona 8. 16. 64.
Goal Kickers: J. Rafferty 2, Z. Kadour 2, C. Lawson , L. Gardiner , J. Robbins , T. Lunardi
Best Players: S. Kennedy, A. Chiu, T. Lunardi, D. Barnaby, J. Rafferty, C. Gallagher
RESERVES:
Our reserves team had a great battle with Albion with neither team getting the ascendency in the first half which saw Albion go into the half time break 4 points up. Brett Miller was brilliant again kicking 4 goals, and the ever relaible Allan Cassar was rock solid as usual rebounding everything that came his way. Ben Fogarty played a great game as did Billy El Souki and Kev McDonald.
The highlight of the match was the "Game Changing" goal kicked by the Altona FC living legend himself Adrain Spiteri. Some spectators have described the goal as ... not bad, and some have described it as pretty good, but after speaking to Spita after the game he assures me that it was easily "Goal of the Decade".
Goal Kickers: B. Miller 4, L. Baker , B. El Souki , M. Van Den Oever , B. Fogarty , A. Spiteri , K. McDonald
Best Players: B. Miller, B. Fogarty, A. Cassar, L. Baker, B. El Souki, K. McDonald
DIV 1 - U18
After an fairly even first half of football, our Division One Altona U18 team broke the game open in the second half to record a 32 point win. Trent Rafferty played a great game as did Ryan Kelly, new comer Dylan Di Genova, Munir El Houli, and Danny Hutcheson.
Goal Kickers: C. Irving 4, D. Di Genova 3, T. Szanyi 2, M. El Houli 2, J. Allen , M. Debono , J. Cook
Best Players: T. Rafferty, R. Kelly, W. Ward, D. Di Genova, M. El Houli, D. Hutcheson.
DIV 2 - U18
It was a disappointing effort from our Division 2 U18 team early last Saturday letting Parkside get away to an early lead. Our boys eventually started matching it with Parkside but the damage was done early and we could not catch them. Tyler Fiteni played a great game even after being punched behind play and taken off, and when he came back on he continued his good form.
Goal Kickers: B. Masterson 2, T. Fiteni
Best Players: J. Patterson, C. Cummings, M. Dennaoui, K. Sewart, B. Jones, T. Fiteni
