The Tigers are now well clear on top of the Summerland League Table with 3 rounds left of the 2011 season after a solid 43 point come from behind win over the Swans on Saturday at Lismore. For only the second time this season the Tigers fielded a full 22 players and were able to match the Swans fitness and running to take the points.
It wasn’t all Tigers though with the Swans coming hard out of the blocks in the first quarter to take a strong 19 point lead into the first break. The Tigers were lack lustre to say the least, second to the ball and falling off tackles to allow the young Swans side to break away with some quality goals.
The second quarter saw a much better effort from the Tigers across the park with constant pressure on the ball and the Tigers quality midfield started to win the ball forward. The multiple inside fifties gave the Tigers plenty of opportunity to score which they squandered with a 2 goal 10 behind quarter, the Swans only managing 1 behind thanks to quality defence from the backline.
At half time the Tigers lead was 1 point and both teams were well in the game on a beautiful sunny day for football. The highlight of the first half was definitely a nomination for mark of the year from the flying hobbit Jimmy Walle who defied gravity to take an amazing grab on the half forward line.
The second half was predominantly Tigers with the return of ruckman Strope the ball was consistently moving forward and full forward Jacob started to capitalise bagging 7 goals for the game in a strong performance, including a miracle reverse heel strike of the ground from inside the pack that silenced the rowdy Swans crowd.
Bones , Merc, Popey and Spence worked hard in the forward line and the goals started to come for the Tigers. Great games from Johnno in the middle and Arty and Timmy in the backline contributed to a strong come from behind win for the Tigers and helped erase the painful memory of the last time the Tigers visited the Swans turf. Whilst the two clubs have had their share of heated clashes this game was played hard and in good spirits, a credit to both clubs.
With only 3 rounds of the home and away season to go the Tigers are nearly guaranteed the Minor Premiership for the second year in a row and starting to find fitness and form at the business end of the season.
