KEAST THE DARLING OF CITY AFTER STRONG WIN.
Cameron Keast’s move into the ruck late in the second quarter proved the catalyst for City’s rousing 57 point victory over Terrigal Avoca in the Black Diamond AFL top-of-the-table clash on Saturday at No.1 Sportsground. See more...........
The Blues won 22.11 (143) to 12.14 (86) to lengthen their lead by two victories from the Panthers and Cardiff.
At half time the Blues lead by a goal, but the momentum had already shifted as Keast shut down gun ruckman Angus Darling in the centre of the park.
In the third quarter the Blues kicked 12 goals to Terrigal’s two to put the match beyond doubt.
“Keast was dominating the hit-outs, we were winning the clearances and we kicked four or five goals in six or seven minutes which was the change in the tide” Blues coach Courtney Knight said. “We reloaded the gun at half-time and tried to do what we did at the end of the second quarter, and we were lucky enough to surge ahead”
Full Forward Maurice Goolagong troubled the Blues early and finished the match with seven majors. Blues youngster Hayden Kavanagh marked Goolagong for most of the first half before he injured his AC joint in his should and was replaced by Nick Woodhams.
City played the majority of the match with a one-man bench after also losing Anthony Stewart (rolled ankle) and Reyne Hondow (broken nose) in the opening five minutes. Hondow returned to the field late in the game.
James Drury and Josh Wheeler were the best in front of goal for City kicking 5 majors each.
In the next fortnight City face top-four sides Warners Bay and Cardiff, and wins would seal the minor premiership. “That’s not really the focus” Knight said. “Obviously it would be a good result of successful football, but we are really building towards the end of the year. I think we’ve still got a lot to work on and that’s really a positive thing”.
