The Lismore Swans were too strong for the Byron Bay Magpies on Saturday in very wet conditions at Oaks Oval. The Swans had a number of players missing from Saturdays match but that didn't stop the boys as they notched up a strong victory on Hughesy's 50th for the club.
The first quarter was tight and scrappy as the rain tumbled towards Byron's end of the goals, it seemed as though it was going to be a tight and scrappy affair as only very few could handle the ball cleanly. Tom Merrett was excellent in driving the ball out of the half back line while Will Alexanders clean handling of the football and decision making proved vital as the ball was driven forward towards Dean Webb and Ihanimo Nathaniel. The Scrappy quarter saw the Swans trail by a solitary point at the first break.
The rain stopped and the Swans took control of the game in the second term as Rowan Hindry worked tirelessly out in getting the ball out of the midfield continuesly sending the ball forward to the strong marking Dean Webb who provided plenty up forward as the Swans skipped away to a 33 point half time lead.
The third quarter proved to be a spectacle and gave the Lismore Swans supporters plenty to cheer about. Daniel Bruce switched on back to his best while Dean Webb was definately on up forward kicking a brilliant goal from the boundry line on the run to stirr up Lismore's crowd. It was evident the Swans were enjoying their football as everyone joined in in a team effort to lead by 52 at the final break.
The game was never in doubt and in the final term Daniel Bruce continued his dominance to kick 5 for the game as the Swans kicked 7 final quarter goals to win by 77 points.
A very good effort all round in what should be the start of the Swans finals campaign. Best on the day were Daniel Bruce, Dean Webb, Rowan Hindry, Tom Merrett, Ihanimo Nathaniel and Ben Hughes
Goal kickers: Daniel Bruce 5, Dean Webb 4, Rowan Hindry 3, Ihanimo Nathaniel 2, and singles were kicked by Sam Rumball, Will Alexander, Steve Smith, Chris Fielder, Shaun Wadwell, and Ben Hughes
Next week the Swans host the Tweed Coast Tigers and will be determined to put on a good performance similar to that at Mortimor Oval earlier in the year
