A beautiful winters saturday, sun shining and well groomed deck awaited as we took on the boys from Doveton. A cameo appearance from the wombat doing his best impression of a maggot was a refreshing change.
Under manned after several changes at the selection table, but with some good troops returning we were confident of a good battle. St Johns impressed us last time around with their organisation and again showed us how well drilled they were. Their structures and voice was first rate and something the boys need to aspire to in order to climb our way up the ladder.
Kicking with a strong breeze St Johns jumped us early and dominated possession in the first quarter, our backline under seige as the ball was delivered lace-out to their big leading talls. In the 2nd quarter we steadied a bit with the breeze at our backs, started to use the footy better and managed to hit up on the scoreboard.
The second half was more of the same, St Johns showing us up for skill and organisation and our boys fighting hard at the contest.
As many people mentioned after the game, our endeavour is never questioned, week after week the boys turn up, put their head down and fight the game out to the finish for the jumper. Where we need to improve is our skill level and 'smartness' around our structures at stoppages. To do this we need all players at training and working on their games!!
Sammy 'manchild' Porter was enormous rucking unchanged against much bigger opponents and holding his own. Despite the volume of footy in our backline Gommers, Gib, Zib and Pete Owen never gave it up and put the big fist in whenever possible. Gommers again gave great leadership and also a spark when moved into the midfield. Brauny racked up possessions and worked hard up and back to give the defenders a chop out and Bones looked dangerous even when outnumbered down forward.
Massive week for us this week as we tackle Sth Melb at home, a game we have targeted for some time. If we stick together and bring the same effort as the last 2 weeks we will walk away victorious this week. Committ to a big week on the track and support Shoz and Spikka this week, i'll be tanning it up in Darwin but keeping a hopeful eye on the scores!!
