The Bracks Government will provide over $6500 to help the Greta Football Club protect its playing field from the impact of dry conditions.
The Minister for State and Regional Development, John Brumby, said the grant would enable the club to install a bore and fix the damage created by dry conditions to the Greta Recreation Reserve surface.
Mr Brumby said the grant would be provided under the State Government’s new $1 million Country Football Ground Assistance Program.
“The football club is at the centre of social activity in Greta, but extreme dry conditions and water restrictions over recent years are taking their toll,” he said.
“Many grounds across the State have been declared unfit for play due to earth hardening, resulting in training sessions and local matches being deferred, transferred or cancelled.
“In Greta, the conditions have produced insufficient grass growth and created an uneven surface that has also become infested with damaging insects.”
Mr Brumby said the grant to Rural City of Wangaratta would cover half the cost of establishing a bore to irrigate the reserve, install an electrical pump, spray for cockchafer beetle damage and re-seed the ground.
The grant is part of the latest package of funding announced today, in which $223,679 has been allocated to18 football leagues across 13 shires.
