Macquarie University were unable to overcome a determined Southern Power in Round 10 of the Sydney AFL competition, as the visitors kicked away in the second half to record a 46 point victory. There was just two goals between the sides at half time, but the Power were too strong in the second half kicking nine second-half goals to run out 14.10.94 to 7.6.48 victors. Captain Brett Harland lead the goal-kicking for the Warriors, while Andrew Polkinghorne fought tirelessly all day through the midfield.
Coach Lindsay Bassani was disappointed after the game describing the loss as a “real Jekyll and Hyde effort”. But the coach was still optimistic suggesting his team will use the mid-season break to “refresh and refocus our efforts on the training track, returning a much more determined unit in the second half of the season”.
In Division 3, the Macquarie Uni Reserves dominated stages of their game against Southern Power getting out to a seven-goal lead at three quarter time. But the Warriors were forced to fight out a tough last quarter with the Power kicking five unanswered goals, to scare the home side. But in the end, the Warriors’ defense held strong to secure a 10-point victory. Coach Luke Gemmill described the win as “a good result from a game we had to win to keep our season alive”. Simon Lawrenson lead the scoring with four goals for Macquarie.
The Warriors were outstanding in Division 4, as they registered their ninth straight victory for the season and go into the break undefeated and on top of the ladder. Travelling to Village Green, the Warriors put on seven second quarter goals against university rivals UNSW, on their way to a 10-goal victory. Forward Rowan Pryor kicked seven goals for the Warriors in what could only be described as a clinical demolition of their opponents. Coach Matthew Scoular praised his team saying, “We played a good brand of aggressive and attacking football which allowed us to record a healthy win”.
And in Division 5, Macquarie was able to avenge an early season loss to Camden, keeping the visitors to just three goals before a devastating injury to Camden’s Keegan Tunstill brought an early finish to the game. Andrew Kent continued his stellar season kicking four to lead the competition’s goal kicking tally after nine rounds, while club captains, Simon Cake and Matthew Chaplin were amongst the Warriors’ best. After the game, Tim Bone reflected on the win saying, “while it was great to get the four points, you never want to see a game finish like that. We wish Keegan all the best in his recovery”.
All teams have a bye over the long weekend and will hold team meetings at the Epping Hotel to review the season to date.
