SENIORS:
It was a rough and tumble affair down at Port Melbourne last Saturday when Altona took on Port Colts. It was clear that Colts were out to exploit their younger Altona opponents and they threw everything at out boys early in the first quarter. Altona weathered the storm and Colts were inaccurate in front of goal but they still went into the first break with a 6 point lead.
The second quarter started much the same as the first with Colts out to prove a point to their younger rivals. Colts looked like they were ready to break the game open but Altona hung in there and served it right up to them. Hollywood was excellent in the ruck in the first half and gave our midfielders in Gags and Miles first use of the ball, and our backline was solid with Nathan Leslie, David Barnaby and Lee Spiteri proving plenty of run out of the back line. Colts went into the main break with a slender 1 point lead.
It was clear that our Altona boys were not going to be intimidated and we came out after half time with a real purpose and that was to take control of the game. It was an arm wrestle early in the third quarter until the Altona boys broke loose and got their running game going. Altona outscored Colts 5 goals to their 1 goal to go into the three quarter time break with a 20 point lead.
Altona dominated the last quarter running Colts off their legs. Ziggy was on song in front of goal kicking 5 goals for the match, Hollywood kicked 3 goals, as did second gamer Matty Tedesco who played a great game. This was a brilliant win by Altona who won the game by a healthy 37 points and the final scores were Altona 22. 11. 143 defeated Port Colts 14. 22. 106.
