Macquarie University’s Division One side took on Manly-Warringah at Weldon Oval in Round Nine and were determined to prove their premiership credentials by taking it to the top of the ladder Wolves. The two teams were hardly separable all day before a four goal last quarter by Macquarie saw the visitors charge home 11.12.78 to 6.9.45.
Coach Lindsay Bassani praised the side’s efforts after the game, saying, “This was our biggest challenge of the season and we stood up today”. But Bassani also challenged his squad to keep the momentum going, adding, "While today was like living on a prayer, we are only half way there. We need to keep our focus and intensity heading into the second half of the season". Captain Brett Harland kicked three goals for the Warriors who now join the Wolves on top of the ladder with eight wins each.
In Division Three, the Macquarie Reserves side got their season back on track with a 54-point thumping of East Coast Eagles. The Warriors kicked five goals to one in the opening term to stamp their authority on the game, while only inaccuracy in front of goal prevented the lead blowing out even further, finishing the game 13.17.95 to 6.5.41.
The Warrior forwards were dominant on the day with Ashwin Govender (five), Patrick Barclay (four) and Peter Hyndman (3) all contributing.
In the other grades, Macquarie accounted for Moorebank 10.9.69 to 7.11.53 at home in Division Four to remain undefeated and on top of the ladder, while the Warriors’ Division Five side struggled against a much stronger Wolves side, going down by 105 points at Weldon Oval.
Macquarie University has seven teams in the Sydney AFL competition, including four senior men’s teams, two U18’s sides and a Women’s team.
