A well deserved win as we played a good brand of team oriented football especially after half time. However, once again, we gave the opposition a start which we pulled back to end the first term on par with the tigers. The defensive pressure all over the ground intensified giving us plenty of optimism for the next three quarters, or so we thought.
The positive finish to the first term did not eventuate at the start of the second and a very ordinary 15 mins of football in this quarter allowed Werribee to take control of the game as we appeared to lose our bearings and let them score 7 unanswered goals. A couple of undisciplined acts where we gave away 50 m penalties at the start of the quarter was followed by us the letting the opposition have far too much space allowing them to kick easy goals.
The Zebras addressed the situation and decided to regroup closing down the gaps through the midfield. The leadership of James Magner, Adam McQualter, Rob Eddy, Chris Irving, Raph Clarke and Tom Simpkin (who played exceptionally well.) put the brakes on Werribee’s free flowing football and we answered with 5 of our own goals. The pressure that we applied from the 15 minute mark of that second term became the trademark for the rest of the game. The need for this style of football was reinforced at the long break as the Coach Brett Lovett let all the players know the importance of adhering to the team rules and the game plan.
A number of positional moves were made and our third term was the most productive for the year. Raph Clarke, Ryan Gamble, Tom Walsh, Jason Gram and Tom Simpkin all found themselves heavily involved in this term as we began to share the goals amongst the midfield and forwards. Mick Lourey kicking five in another very good performance. James Magner, Ricky Ferraro, Chris Irving, and Tom Ledger not only kicked goals but their work rate without the ball created opportunities for their team mates. However what was most impressive was the willingness of players to use the right options as we moved the quickly into our forward 50. Our efficiency improved markedly as we created targets and were able to move the ball swiftly forward. The performance of Darcy Brown in his first senior game was a real positive for the club. Elevated from our TAC alligned side Sandringham Dragons he appeared very comfortable with the added pressure of Senior VFL football and contributed a great deal in his cameo appearances on the ground.
We continued to play with the same aggression in the last term and ran out the game strongly as we applied the physical pressure at the contests resulting in team goals. A very good team effort. We now look forward to playing Casey at home in which we will continue to work hard to achieve the same results of our second half last Sunday.

Although beaten convincingly on the weekend by some very good opposition I thought we showed some positive signs throughout the game. Our ability to not only be able to compete against such opposition but have them on the back foot at stages, only goes to show the improvement in the group. The next challenge we face is being able to sustain that level of play throughout the game which will come as the development continues. At stages we moved the ball in a manner that Werribee were simply not able to counter, it was clean quick and the type of exciting football we are trained to play.
Some of the better performances of the day came from Saints Rookie Tom Curren who continues to impress with his damaging use of the ball and super impressive work rate, he found the footy 24 times, had 12 Ball gets, 8 Handball Receives and kicked 3 of the teams 8 goals to be clearly best on the ground. Brett Dore was impressive in his first game back from a lower leg infection repelling a number of attacks from half back and willing himself to continually beat whoever was put in front of him, he had 23 disposals and 10 marks. Matt Stapleton continues his resurgence to form with a 28 disposal game whilst also gathering 11 Handball Receives and 5 tackles, along with his midfield/backline mate Matthew Wade who pleasingly showed some of his early season form gathering 17 possessions, 5 tackles, 8 Ball Gets, and 7 Handball Receives. Robbie Cathcart was once again impressive in the midfield finding the footy 25 times along with 5 Tackles, 10 Ball Gets and 12 Handball Receives, whilst Dylan Jones was very impressive playing in a new role up forward with 15 touches, 8 Marks and 2 Goals whilst showing just how damaging he can be when he’s up and going.
This week we return home against the Casey Scorpions in what shapes as a very good encounter and an opportunity for the boys to return to some winning form should we continue to develop and play the style of footy we showed on the weekend. Never at any stage have the boys showed signs of giving up, and with the continued improvement from our young leaders things can only get better as the season rolls on. Go Zebs!!!
