Back at home on a water-logged bottom oval, we took on a reluctant Glen Eira in a top of the table vs bottom clash. From the outset the Glen Eira boys did not get the easy footy they were hoping for as our midfield hunted the ball and man relentlessly. The message for the day was very simple, man on man footy and this was executed extremely well in testing conditions. The game was an arm wrestle for much of the first half before Glen Eira found some breathing room in the 3rd with a couple of goals.
While we were not able to win the game, the improvement from last weeks debacle was amazing. Although undermanned after some late changes, the team had zero passengers and everyone was willing to put their head over the footy and win the contested possession. This was also our best tackling performance of the year.
Captain Spikka revelled in the conditions and made a strong case for senior selection with his courageous attack on the footy and leadership. Big Al Guthrie finally got through a game for the first time this year!! Taking on a monster in the ruck Al gave us first use and when he wasnt winning taps, followed up with ground work and tackling. The defence was again led by the brick wall Daniel Zuccon who repelled many GE attacks. Sam Porter was a mad man on ball and across half back and never leaves any doubt that he is working at 100% capacity. First gamer Michael Aloisio was tough and clean when he had the footy and Junior again won his position and was first in and under to the ball.
A much better all round effort, the challenge for us to minimise the difference between our best and worst football and we look forward to next week!
