The Macquarie University Australian Football Club have celebrated another victory from their women’s team over the weekend, while both men’s teams suffered narrow defeats in the Sydney AFL competition.
The women’s team, who last season failed to win a game, now sits in 6th position on the ladder after four rounds, after recording their second win of the season against Wollongong on the weekend.
The Warrior women also kicked their highest total for the season to defeat Wollongong 6.8.44 to 4.4.28 at University Oval in North Ryde.
A slow start by both teams saw just one goal kicked in the first half, but Macquarie turned up the pressure in the 3rd quarter booting four goals to take a commanding lead into the final term. Despite a four goals to Wollongong in the final quarter, the Warriors were able to kick one of their own and hold on for a 16-point victory.
Kim Woldhuis and Amanda Farrugia both kicked two goals for Macquarie, while Aislinn Albury and Leanne Gordon kicked one each.
Captain Emma McClelland was delighted after the game and praised the girls’ efforts, saying, “We worked together really well today and it was great to get another win”.
MUAFC President Luke Gemmill also extended his congratulations to the women’s team, adding, “We couldn’t be more proud of the determination the girls have shown in learning the game and continuing to improve their skills”. Gemmill added, “The girls deserve this win and the future success they will undoubtedly have over the rest of the season”.
In the men’s competition, Macquarie had a bye in Divisions One and Four, whilst suffering narrow losses in both Divisions Three and Five.
Round 9 will see Macquarie Uni travel to Weldon Oval against Manly-Warringah in Division One. Division Three will take on East Coast Eagles at Bruce Purser Oval, whilst Division Four host Moorebank and Division Five take on Manly-Warringah at home. The Women’s team will travel to Mahoney Oval for their round five fixture against Newtown.
