On Monday 16th May AFL Victoria Metropolitan Regional Development Managers invited Secondary School Teachers and AFL Victoria School Ambassador’s to attend the 2011 AFL Victoria G-Footy Professional Development Day. The day was held at the newly redeveloped home of the Richmond Football Club, and was a great success with more than 50 teachers in attendance from various schools across the region.
The day was kicked off by Gary Brown who welcomed our guests and gave a brief insight into the great effect that AFL players, and the game itself, can have on individuals in the community. This was highlighted in a short video featuring past players such as Jason McCartney, Ted Whitten and Troy Broadbridge. He then spoke of the various AFL Victoria Schools Programs offered to secondary schools throughout the regions.
Luke Murray, the Indigenous Community Engagement Co-ordinator at the RFC, then spoke about the Korin Gamadji Indigenous Institute, before the AFL Schools and Education Manager Mark Riddiford addressed the group explaining opportunities such as the AFL Ambassador program, AFL quiz, AFL ticket offer and various online resources.
Teachers then moved into one of the lecture theatres where Richmond Assistant Coaches Justin Leppitsch and Brendon Lade gave a fantastic and interactive look into the planning and review that goes into each of Richmond’s games. Both coaches were extremely open in their presentations, allowing the teachers to see first hand the various techniques, programs and systems used by clubs at the top level. Teachers were then given the opportunity to do a brief tour of the new facility with Michael Roberts.
Lunch was then served before the teachers moved outside for a skills and drills demonstration facilitated by Len Villani and Tom Delahunty before Shawn Wilkey and Mick Stinear spent time going over more in-depth game sense style drills, before concluding the session with a match of AFL Recreation Football.
The day finished with all schools being presented with their G Footy resource packs which included footballs, coaches’ boards, medallions and other resources.
The AFL Victoria Development Managers would like to thank all of the teachers who attended with a special mention to the AFL Schools and Education Manager Mark Riddiford for his attendance on the day.
All the best for the 2011 season!
