Saturday saw a day of glorious sunshine, perfect weather for footy. Two games at Gore Hill, and two games at Waverley were on the menu; a feast for footy fans.
The first game was at Gore Hill, with the Under 18s taking on Riverview. The Bombers got off to a quick start, scoring in the first minute, but it would be their only goal of the quarter; as the St Ignatius boys controlled the midfield.
The Bombers trailed by 9 points at the first change, and Riverview looked dangerous early in the second term. But fortunately they missed some shots they should have kicked, which kept the Bombers within striking distance. And later in the quarter the Bombers began to find their rhythm, their passes began to connect with team-mates; and with two quick goals the margin was cut to 10 points at the long break.
The premiership quarter didn't go our way. Riverview started quickly with a couple of quick goals, threatening again to run away. But the Bombers fought back late in the quarter, getting more possessions and peppering the goals. But they were unable to manage a goal until the final minute of the quarter, and trailed by 18 points at three-quarter time.
North Shore came out firing in the final quarter, two quick goals getting the margin back to within a kick. But the pressures of playing from behind, having to take risks, hoping the calls will go our way - those pressures took their toll. The Bombers got out of jail against St George last week, but there was to be no repeat this time as Riverview steadied; and the final margin was 12 points.
At Waverley, the First Division match saw our reserves against UTS. Looking to turn around their fortunes after a few losses, the Bombers showed plenty of intentity, tackling hard, working around the ground and building up a 10-point lead at half time.
The Bats came out hard after half time, taking the lead, and it took plenty of hard work for the Bombers to sta within range. But they kept within striking distance, and in a stirring last quarter, a goal from the sideline on an impossible angle by Chris Murphy and then a courageous mark under pressre by Tom Aynsley got the Bombers over the line by 7 points.
Back at Gore Hill, it was hard work for the Bomber thirds, who worked hard but went down by 65 points.
Into the seniors at Waverley. The first quarter was a shootout, with scores tied up at the first change. But the Bombers took control in the second term. Talls Pat Brackin and David Martin were in the thick of the action, but the highlight was a run with 5 bounces down the wing by Adrian Harry. In a strong team performance, the Bombers led by 30 points at the long break.
It was lower scoring in the second half, but the Bombers always had the game under control. The Bombers peppered the goals, not always getting the maximum reward for effort; but the Bombers always looked comfortable as they led by 36 points at the last change and cruised to a 50-point win. Among the highlights of the second half were another sensational run by Adrian Harry and a speckie by Teddy Strudwick in the dying minutes.
