AFL Canberra has announced the ACT Women’s representative team that will compete in the 2011 AFL Women’s National Championships which are held in Adelaide from 7 – 11 June.
The squad has been training for several weeks now and Coach Adrian Pavese believes the team will be very competitive.
"It’s been really tough job to cut down the initial squad as there are so many strong female footballers that are running around in our local competition" Pavese said.
"I think with the team we have selected we will really be a bit of a surprise packet and really take it to the teams in our division."
This year’s team is a good mix of youth and experience with some players attending their seventh Championships while there are three teenagers in the team attending their first Championships. The team will be captained by Ainslie’s Melissa Hurley.
The team also features All-Australian player, Bek Hall and All-Australian Squad member Rebekah Allen.
The Championship fixture consists of two divisions with a promotion/relegation system. After finishing fourth in Division 1 in 2009 the ACT will compete in Division 2 against NSW, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. Division 1 will see the AFL heavy-weights; Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland fight it out for the title.
Ainslie have 5 representatives in the team
They are Melissa Hurlay (Captain), Karina Demant, Hannah Gill, Luisa Marzotto and Meredith Wells.
The Club wishes them all the best for the Carnival.
