The Aquinas boys trecked out to Albert Park to tackle recent rivals Sth Melbourne on a heavy deck. Mentally this week we were prepared for a tough slog in the conditions and the mood pre match was of desperation for a win. The message was kept very simple, the team that wanted it more in these conditions would win the game.
Into the breeze in the first quarter we produced our best footy of the year, leaders Price and Woodward led the way as clearance machines and gave our forwards plenty of opportunities. We took a 2 goal lead into quarter time, with the boys up and about it was important not to get ahead of ourselves. Sth came back at us in the 2nd quarter, Zuccon crucial in defence against a big talented forward/ruckman. Big Haydon went into the ruck and gave us a lift in there, while Luke Brouwer played his best game for the year providing run and carry off his wing.
We went into half time all tied up after a pretty solid half of footy.
10 minutes is a long time in football. That is all that stood between us and our first legit win of the season. At the beginning of the third our structures fell away and we too easily allowed Sth to move the footy out of the clearances and gain easy inside 50s, of which they converted well on the scoreboard.
If I can credit this side with anything its that we dont fall away, it doesnt ever get too hard. We kicked the first two goals of the third as Lachy continued to give us presence up forward and gave ourselves a sniff. Unfortunately we couldnt go on with it and Sth ran out winners by 4 goals. Dissapointing to be in a position of strength, but still nice to know we were in a match for the first time in a while.
Luke Day again shone in the midfield and continues to impress.
With our skipper Stafford back this week and some other big ins we look forward to taking this momentum out to Westbourne and nothing short of the 4 points will satisfy. Get ready for a big week men!!
