Saturday saw Gore Hill bathed in glorious sunshine, although there was a distinct chll in the air. First up was the Third Division match against Macquarie Uni.
The Bombers went into the game with plenty of confidence ater last week's first win, but were soon brought back to earth. The Warriors peppered the goal through the opening term, and with 14 scoring shots to 2 held a 47-point lead at the first change.
The Bombers broke through or their first goal early in the second quarter, and although outgunned their effort couldn't be faulted. Weight of possession kept the scoreboard ticking over for Macquarie Uni, but the Bomber defences kept working hard; particularly notable a passage of play where a smother and then a Macquarie Uni chaser being tackled rom behind when running into an open goal. But at half time the Warriors led by 74 points, and by the last change that lead had blown out to 117 points.
The Bombers tried their best, but the well-drilled Macquarie Uni reserves were too good on the day, and finished with a 129-point result.
Meanwhile a better result at Olds Park or our Under 18s. The Bombers played out a thriller against St George, snatching the game by just 2 points with the winning goal coming in the final minute.
Next up was our reserves, who took on Macquarie Uni's seniors. And it was an explosive start for the Bombers, with a goal in the opening minute. But it was to be their only one for the quarter, and the Warriors took a 15-point lead into the first change.
The Bombers tried hard, but were unable to keep up with the Warriors, and as the game progressed the margin blew out progressively. By the last change it was oout to 91 points. But the Bombers kept fighting, and tightened the defence in the last quarter. Although they were well beaten, they were able to hold the Warriors goal-less in the final term and win the quarter.
And then it was time for the seniors, taking on Balmain. And the first quarter was sensational entertainment. From Seb Paynter crumbing the opening goal to Teddy Strudwick's sensational effort from the flank to complete a coast-to-coast play by the Bombers, there was some sensational footy on display. It was evenly contested, goal for goal, and the Bombers led by 4 points at the first change.
It was low-scoring in the second term, one goal apiece; but it was a closely-contested quarter. And scores were tied up at the long break.
But Balmain stepped up after the break, with four quick goals. The Bombers could have been in trouble, but worked hard and were rewarded with getting one goal back thanks to a big speckie up forward by Pat Brackin. Shortly afterwards Ron Wason turned on a barnstorming run through the centre with four bounces before sending the ball into the forward line, but the ensuing shot hit the post. The Dockers held a 3-goal lead at the last change.
The Bombers needed a spark, and it came with another big run from Ron Wason culminating in a goal, and suddenly the Bombers were back to within two kicks. It was low-scoring, the ball travelling from end to end, an arm-wrestle of attrition. But unfortunately the Bombers were unable to complete the comeback, and three goals to Balmain in time-on blew the final score out to a bigger margin than the run of play would have indicated.
