Back on the bottom oval once again, the reserves welcomed 2 first gamers for the club in Al Guthrie and Luke Day, as well as returning under 19s players Rosevear and Fawcus.
The game didnt start too well for one of our new boys, Al learning the hard way that mouthguards are a must after having hs 2 front teeth knocked through his front lip and having to meke a couple of donations to the dentist over the coming weeks. We wish him a speedy recovery after a courageous start to his Aquinas career.
Therry Penola provided our toughest test so far and were clearly the benchmark team we have seen. Big bodies, well structured and willing to run and support team mates were their trademarks. After a difficult first quarter onslaught the challenge was put to the team to learn something off their opponent about work rates and where to run.
The second and third quarters were a tough slog that saw our work rate and pressure on the footy lift to season best levels. First gamers Rosevear and Day were ferocious in the contest and Fawcus was getting plenty of footy (just needs to work on delivery!! :) ). Our tackle counts were way up and we felt like we created many chances moving forward but were unlucky to convert. Down back Gibba and Zuccon were relentless despite the volume of footy coming into our back 50.
Jon Hunt again gave us the leadership required at half back and in the ruck and Tom Hall showed glimpses of what he can offer. Up forward Lachy Alwood took some strong marks and if he kicked straight could have finished with a bag. During the fourth quarter we started to get some reward for our work and put some respect into our side of the scoreboard.
Whilst possibly our best game so far, we cannot hide away from the reality it was a 20 goal loss. Young players are learning new lessons each game and it is from here we need the improvement to come. With a list that is now settled, players will be missing each week and the team picked on fitness and commitment to the team. We all need to lift and continue to improve starting with this week against rivals Sth Melb. We look forward to kicking off the day with a win and then watching the seniors follow up with another.
