The Lismore Swans defeated arch rival the Byron Bay Magpies on Saturday by 21 points and are showing signs of improvement in a game that was played in great spirits between the two sides.
Due to wet weather the game was re-scheduled to Bangalow however this did not disrupt the Swans as they knew the importance of going out and winning the game after kicking 4 goals 21 the previous game and losing as a result.
The Swans came out blazing in the first term kicking 4 unanswered goals to set the scene in the first quarter. The backline was solid while the midfield continued to drive the ball forward and the forward line capitalised. Accurracy at goal was fantastic and a relief as the Swans marched to a 25 point lead at the first break kicking 7 goals 2 to 3 goals 1.
The Magpies came out firing in the second term and dominated the play in the second half of the quarter. The Swans couldn't wait until the half time siren as inaccurate kicking had returned to their game which saw the Swans lead diminish to only 5 points at the main break. Byron really put the challenge to Lismore.
The third quarter was the premiership quarter and saw both sides come out wanting to get on top. .Swans Rowan Hindry continued to provide the Magpies with problems as did ruckman Shaun Wadwell as he continued to drive the ball forward. Jak Johnson provided a good target up forward. The Swans lead extended to 13 points at the final break.
The Swans started the final term in great form adding goals to their tally while Phil Tsourlinis marked strongly along the centre half back line restricting the Magpies forward movements. To the Magpies credit they didn't stop working as they kept firing at goal to the final siren. Swans victorious in the end by 21 points.
Best on the day were Rowan Hindry, Shaun Wadwell, Phil Tsourlinis, Chris Devonish, Tom Merrett, and Chris Fielder
Goals went to Jak Johnson with 5, 2 each to Rowan Hindry, Chris Devonish, and Dean Webb, while singles went to George Massa, Tom Merritt, Jim Curlis, Chris Fielder, Jason Bevan, and Sam Rumball.
