Another wet week again played havok with the scheduling for Sydney AFL; and North Shore was affected. Both the Under 18s and Third Division games were postponed, but the First Division and Premier Division games at Mike Kenny Oval went ahead.
Conditions were wet under foot as the First Division game got under way, and there would be no respite from the weather as the heavens again opened up. But the Bombers started brightly and led by a goal at the first change. But it was a tough job, playing on a sticky ground with a slippery ball, and a struggle to keep up in the second quarter. The Bombers were unable to score a goal during a scrappy second term, and trailed by 13 points at the long break.
The Bombers struggled to match it with the Demons during the second half. The home side were better able to handle the slippery conditions, as the skies again unleashed their fury with another downpour. The final losing margin for the First Division side was 44 points.
And then it was time for the Premier Division match, on a track that had in parts by now become a quagmire. The Bombers started well, applying themselves in every contest, getting on the bottom of every pack. Pat Brackin was a focal point up forward as the Bombers scored two early goals, keeping the ball bottled up on their forward line. But Pennant Hills fought back late in the quarter, free kicks resulting in two Demon goals that cut the Bombers' lead to 2 points at the first change.
The second quarter was a pleasing example of desperation and dedication. In the appalling conditions, playing to the air was virtually impossible and the ball tended to get bogged rather than bouncing - in particuarly one example where a grubber from Danny Roberts landed in the square and got bogged there. But the Bombers kept working hard, holding the Demons scoreless for the quarter and adding two goals to lead by 15 points at the long break.
The Bombers continued working hard in the third term, applying pressure, solid in defence and working hard in attack. With the only three goals of the quarter, the Bombers led by 35 points at the last change.
By now the game was safe, and after working so hard on such a heavy track, fatigue understandably began to take its toll. The Bombers were outscored in the final quarter, the final margin cut to 18 points; but it was a pleasing win for the Bombers. It was a hard slog for the boys, but they worked hard and deserve the spoils of victory. A morale-boosting result for the club.
