Following the first two rounds of the AFLQ Premier Division Pineapple Hotel Cup the Tradelink Western Magpies stand undefeated following solid wins over Maroochy North Shore and Palm Beach Currumbin. Following the loss of a number of players as a result of not entering the NEAFL many thought the Magpies may struggle in 2011 but the early indications are they will be a strong contender for the Pineapple Hotel Cup.
In Round 1 the Tradelink Western Magpies traveled up the coast to face Maroochy North Shore at Fishermans Rd on number 3 oval after an overnight deluge rendered the main oval unplayable. The Magpies gained the ascendancy early in trying heavy and wet conditions and took a 9 point lead into the first break. The contest was pretty even for the second and third quarter with the margin 12 points at the half and back to 9 points at three quarter time.
In the final quarter the Magpies solid pre-season showed its early benefit with the Magpies taking control and breaking the game open. The Magpies dominated the last quarter kicking 4.4 to the Roos 2.0 to run out 13.17.95 to 11.4.70 winners. Poor kicking from the Magpies kept the Roos in the game and an overall 30 scoring shots to 15 was testament to the Magpies dominance in general play.
Stand outs for the Magpies were Will Fozard who was unbeatable in 1 on 1 contests and read the play brilliantly all day rebounding off a half back flank. Blake McClennan was very good in and under all day in the middle with the heavy wet conditions calling for numerous ground level contests. Billy Moorhead was outstanding on a wing while Sean Mewing on the other half back flank to Will Fozard was also outstanding. Kale Reed was lively up forward while Dom Beer was very good in the ruck and at ground level all day for conditions that did not suit the big man.
Coach Peter McClennan will have been delighted with his spread of goal kickers with a total of 10 goal kickers an indication that his midfield are putting scores on the board along with his forwards. Val Pope, Matt Thompson and Kale Reed all kicked two goals while Reid Dobson, David Hamill, Greg Lavey, Chris Mihalopoulos, Alex Dickfos, Conrad Hudghton and Chris Judson all kicked single goals.

The challenge in Round two was a trip down the coast to face Premier League powerhouse and old rivals Palm Beach Carrumbin under lights at Salk Oval. The Tradelink Western Magpies were strengthened for this key R2 clash with all of its Lions Alliance players available for selection courtesy of Lions having a bye in the NEAFL.
On a perfect night for football the Magpies were slow out of the blocks and PBC gained the early ascendancy in the first quarter in a fast and free flowing contest kicking a 5.2 to 3.3 to take an 11 point lead into the first break.
In the second quarter the standard of football from both teams went to another level with the goals being peppered at both ends of the ground but the Lions had once again had the better of the quarter kicking 7.1 to 5.1. The Lions looked in control of the match holding a 23 point lead at half time.
By the 15 minute mark of the third quarter the Lions had kicked 3 goals to the Magpies 2 and opened up a 30 point lead and the Magpies looked in trouble. Coach Peter McClennan in a master stroke played his trump card injecting Val Pope into the midfield for the first time in the game with astonishing results. Pope generated a number of clearances as the Magpies piled on 6 unanswered goals breaking the game open. When the 3/4 time siren went the Magpies had turned a 30 point deficit into a 6 point lead.
PBC did not lay down at the beginning of the last quarter and stayed in the contest until Pope was again released into the midfield and the Magpies fitness came to the fore and they ran over the top of Lions. A 6.2 to 2.5 last quarter with much improved kicking for goal compared to R1 saw the Magpies run out 27 point winners 22.8.140 to 17.11.113.
Dominic Beer was clearly the Magpies best winning the ruck contests but the highlight was his work around the ground and also at ground level. Billy Moorhead was outstanding all game on the wing and Jack Parkes just as effective at half forward as both players played their best games for the club. Val Pope was effective at half forward but his ability to impact on the game when injected into the midfield was very valuable. Reid Dobson was hard and uncompromising through the midfield while Matt Thompson was outstanding in the forward line. Daniel Dai showed signs of his pace and silky skills in only his second game for the club, watch this space.
Once again a spread of 9 goal kickers for the match would have delighted coach Peter McClennan. Matt Thompson was at his brilliant one mitt best kicking 4 goals well supported by Jack Parkes and Val Pope kicking 3 each. Chris Mihalopoulos, Reid Dobson and David Hamill kicked 2 each while Kale Reed, Peter Kilroy and Alex Kitching finished with singles.
