The Macquarie University Warriors Division 1 side kept the UTS Bats to a solitary goal in Round Two of the Sydney AFL competition to remain undefeated and on top of the ladder. Under lights at University Oval, the Warriors attacked the visitors at every opportunity to record a 15.14.104 to 1.8.14 victory. Coach Lindsay Bassani was thrilled to put one over a team who has held the ascendency in recent years. “It shows this side has the potential to match it with the best” he said. Aiden MacCulloch finished the game with five goals for the Warriors.
In Division 3, UTS kicked four goals to one in the last quarter to overrun the Warriors in a low scoring arm-wrestle that finished 6.6.42 to 9.59 in favour of the visitors. The Warriors lost skipper Darryn Avery (knee) in the first quarter and with no substitute rule, were forced to play out the rest of the game with three on the bench. Coach Luke Gemmill said it was a disappointing loss, conceding “The Bats just wanted it more in that last quarter”.
Scott Uglow wound back the clock in Division 4, booting five goals as the Warriors cruised to a 13 goal victory over the Bats. He was well supported by Warren Lal (4 goals), Rowan Pryor (3 goals) and Andrew Robertson (3 goals) as the Warriors’ forwards capitalized on some excellent supply from the midfield. Coach Matthew Scoular, sung his team’s praises after the game, describing the 20.10.130 to 7.7.49 victory as “well disciplined and highly exciting football”.
And in Division 5, a scathing quarter time address from captain Matt Chaplin fired the Warriors up to record a 102 demolition of Holroyd-Parramatta. The Warriors dominated possession in the first half but couldn’t convert on the scoreboard. However, a 10-goal third quarter blew the game apart as the Warriors made their move. Andrew Kent (6 goals) and Cameron Ludowyke (4 goals) were the stars up forward but all eyes were on Jacky Ou. The international exchange student played in his first ever game of AFL and turned in a solid performance. Coach Tim Wolnizer praised Ou’s efforts saying, “It was great to see him out there giving it a go. He brings a breath of fresh air to the club and reminds the boys why we play the game”.
Round 3 will see Macquarie Uni host UNSW/ES at University Oval in Divisions 1, 3 and 4. While in Division 5, the Warriors will take on Sydney University at home.
