Seniors Match Report by Coach Brett Lovett
Our final practice game against Frankston was a tough physical encounter. The skinny tight ground makes space hard find and you must be able to play a strong inside game. We broke even in that area in the 1st half but were also able to open it up at times with some good quick ball use going forward to have a 8 goal lead at half time. The 2nd half was disappointing as we wasted many shots on goal kicking 3 goals 9 behinds for the half. We also failed to use the ball cleanly which resulted in some lost scoring opportunities and turn over goals. The end result was a win but will need to improve on our goal kicking and playing out the 4 quarters this week. The new game plan is coming along nicely with boys being able to adjust and perform it in the heat of a game. I have also been pleasantly surprised at how well we have gelled together considering all the changes of the coaching and playing groups this year.
The boys are ready to go after a long, tough and challenging preseason. We will go into this week with a strong list to pick from with only a few injuries the saints and our lists. We are obviously looking to get off to a good start this week as the 4 points are now on the end of it. We will be looking to play a 3 way brand of football that is super team orientated but exciting at the same time. Our basic principles are
Attack when “we have it”
Defend when “they have it”
Get in and win it when its “in dispute”
As for the season we will be looking to win 10 or more games to get us back playing finals after 3 years out. We have 3 games then a bye to start the season and will be looking to get a minimum to 2 wins on the board. Easier said than done but with a strong, healthy and hungry list ready to start the season we will have no excuses. It’s a “new beginning” let’s get it started
Reserves Match Report by Coach Mick Ablett
Finally the boys got the result they deserved, to the tune of a 130 point thumping of an undermanned Frankston at Kars St on Saturday. Michael Lourey proved why he is widely regarded as a Senior footballer at VFL level bagging 10, Matthew Boland was again a very strong focal point up forward continuing his impressive early season form with a handful of his own. Maddison Andrews worked tirelessly all day in the midfield along with St Kilda's young star Tom Curren, both showing strength in a number of contested situations along with the ability to use the football very productively. Peter Shakallis, James Hallahan and Jackson Ferguson continually repelled attacks from Half Back both in the air and at ground level, setting up a number of scoring opportunities throughout the day. Kelvin Barnes displayed a high workrate coming off Half Forward as he also showed us his ability both in a marking contest and at ground level.
It was a very pleasing result and gave our boys due recognition for what has been a very promising pre-season series of games. The improvement in our start proved vital to the outcome of the game, getting out from under the blankets early meant we were able to open our account with an 8 goal first term whilst holding the opposition goaless. Continued improvement on our game plan and ball movement has been a very pleasing aspect of this young groups progression. As previously mentioned Frankston were no doubt undermanned, however if we continue to play the brand of football we did over the weekend there will be a number of sides feeling a little uneasy.
Hopefully injuries to both Robbie Cathcart (Ankle) and Jarrod Allan (Hamstring) don't provide too much of a setback for either of them as both have big years ahead of them. With Round 1 approaching this week, enthusiasm and belief amongst the Reserves is high and the expectation from the players themselves means 2011 will definitely be one to keep an eye on. Go Zebs!
