Will "Buckets" Ley: 1978 - 2011
On morning of Tuesday 22nd March Will Ley known fondly as “Buckets” amongst his mates, passed away in his sleep after a long battle with a brain tumour.
Will, a Life Member of the Macquarie University Australian Football Club will be remembered as the ultimate clubman. During his seven years with the MUAFC from 1997 to 2004, Will played132 club-games - 93 of those in first grade. Off the field Will’s commitment to the club was equally as strong. During his years of service Will filled a number of club and administrative roles including; Coach, Committee Member, Club Secretary and was also as a member of the Macquarie University Sports Association.
1999 was probably the best year of his career, when he shone in the backline. This was also the club’s best year on record with both First and Reserve grade making the Grand Final. Unfortunately, Will broke his collarbone in the 1999 Preliminary Final, and sadly missed out in being part of the 1999 Premiership team.
When he was in hospital getting his collar bone fixed he cried uncontrollably, not because of the pain, but because he knew he was going to miss playing in a premiership side. This symbolises the passion he had for the club.
He continued his great form in 2000 and played in MUAFC premiership side against Sydney University in the same year, but only spent a short time on the field due to a concussion he received in the early stages of the game. Although he was never able to recall much of the game, he well and truly earned his Premiership medal.
In round 1 of 2004 he received a knock to the head. As a result he got some bad headaches and the injury caused him to get his head checked out properly. He had been getting headaches for some time, and it was fortunate, in a way, that this untimely injury led to him getting medical treatment earlier than he otherwise would have. This was when his tumor was first discovered.
Will was a passionate player, and equally passionate about the MUAFC “Kookas” (now Warriors). He was a big part of the Kookas and the culture that made it such a strong club. Will was one of the people who launched the legendary Macquarie Mail club newsletter, and contributed to it regularly.
He was a fanatical supporter of the Hawthorn Football Club and wore the number 19 jumper for Macquarie in honour of Jason Dunstall.
Will faced his illness very bravely and remained positive right to the end. He was a great friend to many people and will be remembered as someone who was always so positive, happy and fun to be around.
He will be missed as a friend and legend of MUAFC.
