Senior Summary – By Senior coach Brett Lovett
The boys came ready play showing plenty of positive signs throughout practice match number one. It was great to see all the boys teaming, competing and playing to the new game plan we’ve been working hard on in a match situation.
The corner stone to our game plan will be doing the basics well. In this game our team defensive pressure and attack on the footy was very good for the majority of the game. The pleasing part showed our work defensively didn’t limit our
ability to attack and hit the score board having 30 plus scoring shots. It was also great to see the boys run out the game so well considering the heat and lack our rotations available on the bench in the last quarter.
It shows that boys are super fit and their preparation for the day was very professional. A nice result that gives us the confidence that we are heading in the right direction.
Reserves Summary – By Reserves coach Mick Ablett
Despite a disappointing 20 point loss first-up there were some very encouraging signs from a young reserves outfit. With 9 players on the bench and a host of players on limited time (due to injury/interrupted pre-seasons) we were faced with the task of a substantial amount of rotations to ensure adequate game time and player monitoring. The first 15 minutes of the game were very unsettled and allowed the opposition to jump out to an early 5 goal lead, however to the credit of the boys they didn’t panic and set about working their way back into the game by sticking to the task at hand. At three quarter time the deficit had been reduced to 9 points in what was a very workman like performance. However we couldn’t quite get within striking distance and came up short against a side that was a week further advanced than us due to a practice match against Box Hill the previous week.
There were glimpses of what this side in capable of, which at times proved far too good for Casey. In some of the more encouraging performances Dylan Jones’ work both in the air and at ground level showed that with further improvement he will push for senior selection. Tom McMahon showed some very positive signs with his attack on the football and willingness to continue to present in a key forward role. Madison Andrews shone in his first outing for season 2011 amassing a number of touches as well as clearances in and around the stoppages. Paul Cahill showed his class up forward, marking strongly, presenting continuously and most pleasingly, a willingness to provide forward pressure. Billymo Rist found plenty of the footy throughout the day and also gave us a glimpse of his ability to create opportunities through relentless pressure within the forward line.
All in all the positives far outweighed the negatives in a game that can only help us continue our improvement throughout the pre-season period. I have no doubt our first win will only be around the corner.
