North Mackay AFC confirmed itself as the premier club of AFL Mackay with 3 flags out of 5 grades in 2007.
The Seniors eventually ran out easy winners over Whitsunday after an intense start to the grand final. The win was the culmination of an outstanding season, with just one loss for the year. This premiership was well deserved, and broke a run of two losses in grand finals for the Saints, going down to Whitsunday by 10 goals in 2005 and just a couple of kicks in 2006. It is the Saints 4th flag since 2001 from six grand final appearances in seven years. This is an outstanding record for what has remained a reasonably stable core group of players. Congratulations to Andrew McMahon for his BOG perfomance in the grand final.
After a stunning victory in the 2nd semi-final, our reserve grade went down to the Hawks in the grand final. The game could have gone either way at half time, but the Saints failed to make the most of opportunities when they presented and were overrun in the final quarter. Marc Sealy had a great game on the wing for the Saints but in the end the Saints did not have the answers.
The U/17s also went down in the big one. The loss of key players prior to the game & early in the game did help the cause. The Saints U/17s had an indifferent season, and had more than one battle on their hands just to make the grand final. All involved should be proud of the effort over the year, and we hope that players leaving the U/17 group will continue with the Saints in the Senior ranks.
Our U/14s are Premiers & Champions - not one loss for the year! Ironically, the closest game all year was the grand final, and disaster loomed for as yet undefeated Saints. Good sides dig deep when in trouble, & the young Saints were able to meet the challange & bring home a flag and the title of Premiers & Champions for 2007.
The U/12 grand final was a very tight low scoring affair. Once again, the young Saints were able hold on to record our first premiership for the day. It would be remiss of us not congratulate our U/12 grand final opponents, Whitsunday, for their effort on the day. The kids had the earliest game of the day and had to travel from Airlie Beach for the day, meaning they were out of bed before dawn for a game of footy. We sincerely hope that the success Whitsunday U/12s had in 2007 is a sign of strong development & growth for Aussie Rules in the region.
All up, what an excellent result for the North Mackay AFC for 2007. All five teams played in the grand final, with 3 successful. Our club's win/loss record for the year ( for all grades combined ) was exceptional. From a total of 102 games played ( includes all finals, all grades ), we won 84 games ( 82% win/loss ratio ). Our teams scored a total of 6900 pts with just 2223 pts scored against us, for a ' club ' percentage of 310.39 for the season.
We hope all players, officials & supporters enjoyed this year & are looking forward to maybe 5-from-5 for 2008!
